Animal Crossing Sanrio Amiibo Card Prices Driven Up By Scalpers

Scalpers are at it again, this time driving up the price of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Sanrio DLC characters and items after the amiibo card pack sold out at Target. The Animal Crossing series has become one of Nintendo’s most profitable assets since Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a sensation in 2020. The title managed to surpass its full lifetime sales projections in only a few short months after it was first launched for the Nintendo Switch, and player interest has apparently not waned.

Given its timely release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became popular with those not only familiar with the franchise already, but also with those who were dipping their toes into the life simulation series for the first time. The game became a safe haven during the lockdowns of 2020, allowing people to socialize remotely via a short flight with Dodo Airlines and a trusty internet connection. In that time, Animal Crossing islands have been used to host catch ups, weddings, and graduations throughout the coronavirus pandemic. One has even served as a matchmaker for a now happily married couple.

Sadly, though, some have taken it upon themselves to exploit the love that many have developed for Animal Crossing. Much like they did with PS5 stock, scalpers have been buying Animal Crossing Sanrio Cards and then selling them on for eye-watering prices online. As reported by Kotaku, the cards in question, which unlock new Sanrio-themed villagers and items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, went on sale on Friday morning exclusively at Target. Since first going on sale, the prices these greedy middlemen are asking for have almost doubled, with many asking for $100 or more for the pack of six amiibo cards. This is especially egregious when considering that the retail price is only $6.

Target did put measures in place to try to thwart scalpers. There was a limit to how many Animal Crossing Sanrio card packs that a single customer could purchase. Unfortunately, though, many still seemed to successfully push their luck.

It is unclear if Target is planning a restock of the Animal Crossing Sanrio cards for those still hopeful to get their hands on a set. However, many have reported success with making their own amiibo cards or buying bootleg versions of the cards from online shops like Etsy, an imaginary loss in revenue that Nintendo ensured when it once again understocked a highly sought-after item to scalpers’ benefit.
