Anthony Mackie Starring In Twisted Metal Show From Deadpool Writers

Anthony Mackie will lead Sony’s Twisted Metal live-action series adaptation hailing from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. First kicking off in 1995, the video game franchise put players behind the wheel of deadly modified vehicles as they battled through arenas for the titular vehicular combat tournament. The Twisted Metal series has encompassed eight mainline games and two spin-offs, though no new titles have been produced since the eponymous 2012 reboot developed by Eat Sleep Play.

An adaptation of Twisted Metal has been in the works for nearly a decade since Sony first partnered with Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance co-director Brian Taylor to write and direct a film adaptation. This would ultimately fall apart, however, as Sony felt the fanbase wasn’t large enough to warrant the higher budget needed to bring the film to life. Development would begin anew in early 2019 when Sony revealed a TV adaptation was in development, with this past February bringing new word that Reese and Wernick were developing the series with Cobra Kai’s Michael Jonathan Smith writing and executive producing alongside the duo, Will Arnett, Marc Forman, Peter Principato, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Herman Hulst.

A few months after it was confirmed the series was in the works, Deadline has brought word that Mackie has signed on to Twisted Metal in the lead role. The Marvel Cinematic Universe actor is set to star as John Doe, described as “a smart–ss milkman who talks as fast as he drives” who has no memory of his past and “gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of savage vehicular combat.” Sony Pictures Television EVP of Comedy Development Glenn Adilman wrote about Mackie’s casting in a statement:

“We’ve been big fans of Anthony’s phenomenal body of work over the years and knew he was the only actor who could play a character as complex, funny and compelling as John Doe. Fortunately for us, he agreed.”

For those who have long desired to see the anarchic world of Twisted Metal come to life on screen, Mackie’s casting as the lead of the series should come as an exciting confirmation of progress being made on its development. It should be noted, however, that the latest news states that Sony and PlayStation Productions have yet to sell the project to any networks or streaming platforms as of yet, but given the groundswell of anticipation the MCU star and Deadpool scribes’ partnership is sure to bring to the fanbase should see it find a home shortly. Given the games’ M-rated material and explosive set pieces, it seems likely the studios will be looking to partner with a streamer or a premium cable network such as HBO to properly finance the project and remain true to its source material.

It is also interesting to note that Mackie will be starring as John Doe in Twisted Metal, a character who fans of the franchise will remember from the 2001 franchise reboot Twisted Metal: Black. With the character description keeping his amnesia intact, it will be interesting to see if the creatives behind the series also remain true to his emotional backstory and development or if they will take some liberties to keep audiences on their toes. Only time will tell what Mackie’s latest TV project holds in store for audiences.
