AntMan 3 Director Still Working On Marvel Movie Through The Pandemic

Director Peyton Reed recently confirmed he is still working on Ant-Man 3 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and revealed that the film will be even bigger and even more exciting than the two previous movies in the franchise. Reed was involved as the director for the 2015 Ant-Man film and its sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, both of which became moderate but solid hits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ant-Man 3 is currently targeting a 2022 release date, though it has not been involved in any official MCU announcements.

Marvel, as always, is very secretive about any updates regarding the new movie, but news surrounding Ant-Man 3 has been especially rare as it was not involved in the roster for MCU’s Phase 4. Nevertheless, the film is reportedly going to start production in June 2021, and Jeff Loveness has signed on as its writer alongside Reed. Actors Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly will be reprising their roles of Scott Lang and Hope Pym respectively, with Michael Douglas and Michael Pena likely to be returning as well.

Most recently, Reed revealed that he has been working on Ant-Man 3 through the COVID-19 pandemic in an interview with SiriusXM. Though he wasn’t able to divulge much detail about what exactly the film will be about, Reed claimed that many exciting things are in store for Scott Lang and that the third Ant-Man movie is going to be even bigger and much more “sprawling” than its predecessors were. Reed said:

Let’s see, what am I allowed to say… We are working our way through the pandemic, there’s some really, really, really exciting things in store, none of which, of course, I can speak to you about right now, as is the Marvel way. … I think the third Ant-Man movie is going to be a much bigger, more sprawling movie than the first two. It’s gonna have a very different visual template, and that’s all I will say.

Reed definitely provides some interesting detail about the upcoming Ant-Man film. The first two Ant-Man movies focused on relatively contained threats, but have done a successful job in setting up the Quantum Realm, so Reed may be hinting that Ant-Man 3 will see a continued exploration of the realm and the dangers it poses. Now that Scott Lang has also been accepted as a solid member of the Avengers, especially after his “Time Heist” idea in Avengers: Endgame, Reed might also be suggesting Ant-Man will face up against more dangerous and Earth-threatening villains in the future.

So far, Ant-Man has been seen as a somewhat lower-tier franchise within the MCU, even though it set up important premises for other Marvel films. Hopefully, Reed will bring Ant-Man the recognition it deserves in its new installment and emphasize the Quantum Realm’s role in MCU’s Phase 4. With Lilly’s role being of equal influence as Rudd’s in the third movie, Reed could also draw attention to the significance of female superheroes in the MCU, and even set up a possible future Young Avengers film with the now-teenaged Cassie Lang. It is hard to tell exactly what direction Reed will take Ant-Man 3, but based on his success with the franchise, fans can look forward to a fascinating yet humorous film in 2022.
