Apples NextGen AirPods Pro Buds To Debut In 2022 Insider Claims

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Cupertino-based company plans to launch a new set of AirPods Pro in the final three months of 2022. The report follows an earlier rumor indicating the company would announce a second iteration of the earbuds in the third quarter of next year. It’s worth noting that timeline was already revised, with some leakers stating Apple initially wanted to launch AirPods Pro 2 by the end of June 2022.

Apple introduced the first generation AirPods Pro in 2019, eschewing the look of the original AirPods with shorter stems, silicone ear tips, and black accents on the exterior. The AirPods Pro also have active noise cancellation (ANC), as well as a clever Transparency feature that allows users to keep the buds in their ears while still hearing the surrounding environment. With the launch of the AirPods 3 in October, Apple carried over the aesthetic, minus the silicone tips. The AirPods 3 also lack ANC.

Kuo’s analyst note, reported by MacRumors, follows a slew of rumors about the new AirPods Pro, including that they will have a completely new design. There is talk that Apple will do away with the stems entirely, and instead go for something that looks more like the Beats Fit Pro, which feature an in-ear wingtip for a better fit. There are other signs the firm will make the AirPods Pro 2 more fitness-centric, with reports of built-in sensors for improved activity tracking. Additionally, leaked renders indicate there could be some changes to the wireless charging case, allowing it to play Find My audio alerts.

Apple Rumored To Add A New Chip

Some have suggested Apple will also introduce a new chip to power additional features and provide better connectivity. The current generation AirPods Pro make use of the H1 chip, which oversees ANC, the “Hey Siri” feature, and Apple’s Adaptive EQ. The H1 also handles intelligent switching between Apple devices, but there can be occasional connection issues.

It remains to be seen if Apple will make the rumored changes, or indeed, whether a new version of the AirPods Pro actually does launch next year. The shifting release windows could be a sign that supply chain issues are disrupting the company’s plans, or even that the final design is yet to be locked in. When factoring in the updated look of the AirPods 3, it’s also arguable that Apple might not want to make the cheaper earbuds look too old just yet.
