Aquaman Jason Momoa Researching New 52 DC Comics

Fans of DC Comics are on the verge of getting a live-action feature film renaissance, led by the holy trinity of comic book heroes: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. The DC Extended Universe is also expanding to include other members of the Justice League (before they unite onscreen in 2017), like the King of the Seven Seas, Aquaman.

The casting of Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman too many fans by surprise, though his look as the character has won over a number of skeptics since then. Not one to take the role lightly, Momoa has been assuring fans that he’s doing his research for the role, too, ahead of the character’s solo film release in 2018.

Jason Momoa let fans know how seriously he is taking his big screen role as Aquaman when he was taking part in a panel discussion recently at the 2015 Dallas Comic-Con. Momoa is hoping that fans are willing to “keep an open mind” when it comes to his interpretation of the legendary hero. Here’s what he said to say about his research process (via CBM):

“So, there’s not really a lot of spoilers I can give away. But the research I’ve done on the New 52 stuff with Geoff Johns, and just researching who he is, he’s amazing. He’s got a lot of powers. He’s extremely tough. He’s super strong. But I’m excited about… there’s a big beautiful map laid out and I wish I could carry it with me. It’ll come out soon enough and you’ll see just how big it’s going to be.”

If you haven’t stayed current with the comic books, then you may not know that the New 52 version of Aquaman that Momoa is referring to is the result of a 2011 reboot that DC Comics did of all their comic book titles and continuities. The Aquaman comics New 52 revision, in particular, was overseen by Geoff Johns, Joe Prado, and Ivan Reis. Their run lasted for 16 issues and ultimately lead to the crossover event “Throne of Atlantis”, which was so well received that it was made into a DC Universe Animated Movie.

The New 52 version of Aquaman modified certain elements of the origin of the superhero – including the addition of an early team of heroes that he was paired with, called the Others: a team consisting of Ya’Wara, Vostok-X and Kahina the Seer. Furthermore, the New 52 Aquaman still has his long-standing ability to command the creatures of the sea and survive underwater, along with a variety of other mystical abilities.

Aquaman has been on the receiving end of a lot of jokes over the years – something that’s been highlighted before in the Robot Chicken DC Comics shorts. The New 52 updated version of the character, and no doubt Momoa’s, takes great strides to bringing a new respect and legitimacy to the character.

Aquaman is currently slated to make big screen appearances in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice next year, Justice League: Part One in 2017 and a stand alone Aquaman movie (from director James Wan) in 2018.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23rd, 2017; Justice League on November 17th, 2017; The Flash on March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman on July 27th, 2018; Shazam on April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14th, 2019; Cyborg on April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern Corps on June 19th, 2020. Untitled Batman and Superman solo films will be coming at dates TBD.
