Are Max Raid Legendary Pokemon Catchable In Isle of Armor

A new trailer for the Pokemon Sword and Shield Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra was recently released and showcased a lot of never-before-seen footage of the upcoming DLC, but will players be able to catch the new legendaries? While the video showed that there will be new and returning legendary Pokemon that will be encountered by progressing through the story, it also showed glimpses of players battling returning legendary Pokemon through Max Raid Battles. These Pokemon included Giratina, Groudon, and even Mewtwo, which are all seen in caves in their Max Raid forms.

While it was exciting to see the return of these legendary Pokemon, it also raises the question of whether or not players will be able to catch them. Pokemon Sword and Shield’s story had players fight and capture Eternatus during a Max Raid battle, but during recent events players were able to fight the legendary Mewtwo but were not able to capture him after beating him. In this new trailer for Pokemon Sword & Shield’s DLC, there was plenty of footage of players battling other legendary Pokemon outside of a Max Raid.

In previous titles such as Sun and Moon, after beating the game players had the opportunity to hunt and capture a fairly large amount of legendary and mythical Pokemon. However, in Sword and Shield’s base game that is not the case. In fact, players were only granted the opportunity to capture their game’s exclusive legendary dog and Eternatus. Players could import some legendary Pokemon into their game via Pokemon Home, but there was no way in-game for them to find additional legendaries.

Pokemon’s Max Raid With Mewtwo

That was until Pokemon Sword and Shield held an event where wild Mewtwos would appear in Max Raid battles in celebration of the release of the Pokemon movie Mewtwo Strikes Back. However, players were quickly disappointed when it was also announced they would not be able to capture Mewtwo, but would instead receive rare items and a massive amount of XP for beating him. Since the “rare” items mentioned above weren’t super difficult to obtain, and the use of EXP Candies made leveling up Pokemon a breeze, the incentive for battling Mewtwo didn’t spur many people to take part in the event.

The trailer also shows different battles for when a player fights a Pokemon that is part of the story and when they Max Raid battle a Pokemon. This could lead to the fact that some legendaries may be catchable by progressing the story, and others won’t be if encountered during a Max Raid battle. However, the majority of previous Pokemon games allowed players the chance to catch almost every legendary and mythical Pokemon, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think that players could catch Max Raid legendaries. Then again, the last Max Raid legendary that was released wasn’t catchable, so players will just have to wait and see for themselves if they can catch their favorite legendary Pokemon in the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra DLCs for Pokemon Sword and Shield.
