Army Of The Dead What Happened To Vanderohe

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Army of the Dead.

Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead ends with the reveal that Vanderohe has been bitten, but leaves open just who did this and if it means he’s becoming the new Alpha zombie king. Released on Netflix on May 21, 2021, Army of the Dead sees Snyder both going back to his roots and in full control of his film. Returning to the zombie genre for the first time since his debut feature, 2004’s Dawn of the Dead remake, Army of the Dead (which has no connection to his first movie) serves as one of Snyder’s best and most purely entertaining films to-date.

Structured around a relatively simple heist plan, with the added twist being a Las Vegas overrun by different kinds of zombies – Alphas, who are smarter and faster, and Shamblers, who are more traditional – Army of the Dead delivers on its promise: there’s lots of thrilling zombie action, an exciting heist, and plenty of characters get killed off. Come the end of the movie, only two members of the team led by Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) have survived: his daughter, Kate (Ella Purnell), and his old friend, Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick).

Kate’s future seems relatively simple, as she’s going to use the money her dad gives her to help those in need and maybe open a food truck. But Vanderohe’s is less certain. After improbably surviving the nuclear blast thanks to being in the vault, he and his newfound riches head for Mexico City, only for him to discover on the flight that he’s been bitten. Army of the Dead ends before Vanderohe turns into a zombie, but the stage os very clearly set for him to join – and perhaps lead – the titular army in a sequel. Vanderohe could become the new zombie king, but there are some big questions to be answered about his fate.

We Don’t Know Who Bit Vanderohe (But It Was Probably Zeus)

Army Of The Dead What Happened To Vanderohe

The end reveal that Vanderohe was bitten at some point in Army of the Dead comes as perhaps its biggest twist, and a big part of that is because it’s left so unclear how it happened, and exactly who was responsible. Assuming that all of the zombies were killed by the nuclear strike, so none were alive to bite Vanderohe when he escaped the vault with his life miraculously intact, then the most likely moments are when he and Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) are down by the vault, as there’s not really opportunity (or at least, one that viewers see) before they get there.

The first option, then, is when Vanderohe is bringing Shamblers down the elevator, to be used to set off the traps preventing them from getting to the vault. This sequence is played for laughs, so there’d certainly be a sense of irony if this is where he was bitten. Vanderohe was in close proximity to zombies and much of that was offscreen, so it wouldn’t be completely implausible. However, those zombies did seem to be well under control and Vanderohe could overpower them, while there are no visible bite marks at or after this point, which makes it more likely that it was Zeus (Richard Cetrone) himself who bit Vanderohe.

Zeus’ arrival down in the vault is a particularly dramatic moment, with Vanderohe giving it his best shot but being unable to overcome the zombie king. The whole fight scene is shown and there’s no obvious sign that Vanderohe was bitten by Zeus, though the Alpha does try, which does make the question of just when he was bitten feel more open. Even with that, the most likely outcome does remain that he was bitten by Zeus: he is the character with the clearest means to do so, and the one who presents the most compelling narrative opportunities.

Is Vanderohe The New Zombie King, & Can He Make More Alphas?

Army Of The Dead What Happened To Vanderohe

With Vanderohe making it out of Las Vegas, and having enough cash to set up a nice new life for himself in Mexico City, then the discovery of the zombie bite leaves a major question over just what he’ll decide to do. His only response is a simple “f**k,” so will Vanderohe allow himself to turn into a zombie, or will he try and take his own life before that happens (or ask one of the air stewards to do it for him)? Curiously, Vanderohe has lasted quite a while without changing – when Scott was bitten, he died and then started to turn not long after, but Vanderohe has made it through the nuclear blast and then all the way to the airport, suggesting a delay. Still, his appearance and the fact he is clearly feeling unwell (to put it mildly), hint he is right on the precipice of turning, so it may be that happens straight after the credits roll on Army of the Dead.

Assuming that Vanderohe does become a zombie – because the tease lacks weight otherwise – then the questions become just what will he do, and what kind of zombie will he be? Working on the basis that Zeus bit him, then he will be turning into an Alpha. That said, he could also be something more; something new. Vanderohe wasn’t just bitten by the zombie king, but he would also have been exposed to raditation from the nuclear blast once he escapes the vault. It’s possible that is what delayed the process of him turning, and furthermore it could mean that he is given even greater enhancements or other differences to Zeus – that could mean retaining more of his humanity, but it could also mean becoming an even smarter, faster, stronger, and much harder to kill zombie king.

These differences will be crucial to determining whether Vanderohe can operate like Zeus did, like something even better, or if he is a regular Alpha. Army of the Dead makes it clear that only Zeus can make other Alphas; they, in turn, can only create Shamblers. However, it never explains exactly how Zeus’ powers work or if they can be passed on in some way. So if Vanderohe has somehow been given a more unique power – whether that’s because of Zeus’ bite and death, the radiation, or some other hitherto unexplained factors – then he’d have the ability to create more Alphas, allowing him to truly become the new king. Otherwise, he’ll just be creating Shamblers, which would still be devastating and lead to many deaths, but based on the evidence in Army of the Dead, would be an easier situation to negate.

Vanderohe’s Powers Could Drastically Influence Army of the Dead 2

As it stands, Army of the Dead 2 isn’t happening, with the focus instead on prequel movie Army of Thieves and the animated prequel show Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. Still, there is clear interest from all involved in a follow-up, and the ending with Vanderohe suggests it’s something Zack Snyder will revisit eventually. While the threat of the zombies has been dealt with for now, Army of the Dead 2 could create a new, perhaps even more dangerous outbreak. It seems likely that, at the very least, Vanderohe will create a new wave of zombies who will then overrun Mexico City, before perhaps fanning outwards. And if he can indeed create more Alphas – or a new hybrid – then it would be even more devastating.

One key point of Army of the Dead that’s never fully made clear is exactly what Zeus was doing in Las Vegas. While he had built himself a sort-of civilization, it wasn’t addressed whether they were content to stay there or, as it arguably more likely, had plans to eventually strike when the time was right. He was, after all, amassing an army, and there’s a good chance he was waiting until there were even more Alphas before moving out. Such ideas could be revisited in Army of the Dead 2, would can see Vanderohe commanding his own eponymous army, one that may be bigger and deadlier than ever before. This is why it’s most likely that Zeus was the one who bit him and that Vanderohe is becoming the new zombie king, because only being or creating Shamblers reduces the scope and scale of just how much damage he could cause in the sequel.

There’s also the possibility for Army of the Dead 2 to do something more complex with Vanderohe and his new army. Zeus and The Bride (Athena Perample) don’t appear as typical villains (because they’re not typical zombies), allowing Scott and his group to enter into Las Vegas (with an offering), and with things going south when the queen is killed. That could mean Zeus was happy ruling over his own kingdom in Las Vegas, and combined with the fact that it’s unknown what experiments were conducted to create the first zombie, there can certainly be a situation where they’re not the biggest or worst threat to face, or even the villains at all. That could fit with Vanderohe’s use of a Joseph Campbell quote: “It is by going down into the abyss where we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.” If becoming a zombie is not a curse for Vanderohe, then life itself could be the treasure he refers to, granting a second life (and immortality) to others in a way he instead sees as a blessing, building his own kingdom and setting up a struggle with humanity.

Finally, with most of Army of the Dead’s characters killed off by the end of the movie, then there aren’t many known players who could return in the sequel, but a couple of intriguing options do present themselves. The most obvious is Kate, who is left with the money that Scott managed to keep a hold of, ready to start a new life. Given her personal connection to Vanderohe, then it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if she was drawn into the sequel to try and bring him down, if indeed he is the villain of the piece. Then there’s Dieter, whose fate is left uncertain: it’s hard to envisage just how he survived both Zeus and the nukes, but since his death isn’t shown, then a return can’t be ruled out. Like Kate, he’s got a close attachment to Vanderohe, so it’d make sense to bring him back to face off with his friend in Army of the Dead 2.
