Arrowverse Every Shows Status As Of 2021 (& Major Updates)

Here’s everything we know so far about various shows that make up the Arrowverse and where they stand heading into the Spring 2021 season. With production delays wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic affecting film and television productions around the world for several months, coupled with a number of notable firings and resignations, there is good reason for fans to be unclear on which shows have started production and when they will begin airing new episodes again.

2020 opened on a high note, with the Crisis on Infinite Earths event coming to a close and promising a golden age of superhero television. The Arrowverse – the shared reality made up all the superhero shows on The CW – was revealed to encompass every television series and film ever based on a DC Comics’ property. The final chapter of Crisis established every DC Comics show still in production as part of a new Arrowverse, including the shows then being produced for the DC Universe streaming service. (All of those series, with the exception of Stargirl, are now being produced for HBO Max.) Unfortunately, pandemic-related production delays forced Batwoman, The Flash and Supergirl to cut their seasons short and alter their season finales. The Arrowverse also faced some series shake-ups, with Ruby Rose deciding to leave Batwoman after a single season playing Kate Kane and Melissa Benoist electing not to renew her contract, ending Supergirl after its upcoming sixth season.

As of last week, the Arrowverse seemed to be rebounding, with filming having started or about to start again on most of its series. Unfortunately, production has slowed again thanks to there being only one medical lab in Vancouver capable of running COVID-19 tests and priority going to local schools and businesses over the entertainment industry. This has slowed the rate at which filming can continue, raising some concerns about whether those shows intended to return in early 2021 will be able to do so. Here is a rundown on everything that is known about the various Arrowverse shows heading into 2021.

Arrow

Despite a rumor that Arrow might return for a ninth season, there are no plans for the show that started the Arrowverse to resume production. Stephen Amell has moved on and shot down (pun very much intended) any suggestion that he might return as Oliver Queen in any capacity, having recently started production on a new drama set in the world of professional wrestling called Heels. The rest of the cast of Arrow have also moved on, apart from those actors who had roles in the Green Arrow and the Canaries spin-off pilot that served as the penultimate episode of Arrow season 8.

The Flash

The Flash is notable as the only Arrowverse show that has a trailer for its upcoming season finished. This is largely because most of The Flash’s original storyline for its season 6 finale was abandoned, though most of the filming had been completed back in March 2020. The upcoming seventh season will see Team Flash fighting the new Mirror Mistress as Iris West struggles to free herself from the Mirror Dimension. The state of The Flash after 2021 is uncertain, as star Grant Gustin was in the middle of contract negations for another two seasons when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Nothing has been said about a deal being reached since then, but Gustin has shown no signs he is ready to give up playing Barry Allen any time soon.

Legends of Tomorrow

Legends of Tomorrow was supposed to begin filming shortly, but has reportedly had its shooting schedule delayed once again due to the pandemic. The upcoming season will see the Legends traveling into space and exploring the cosmic side of the DC Universe as they search for the missing Sara Lance, recruiting a new teammate who is an expert on aliens and alien abductions. Nothing has been said one way or the other about the series continuing after season 6 or being in danger of cancellation.

Supergirl

Supergirl reportedly has started shooting its season 6 premiere without lead actress Melissa Benoist, who is still enjoying her maternity leave following the birth of her first child. It is believed that it is Benoist’s desire to focus on motherhood that has led her, the show’s producers and The CW to bring Supergirl to a close at the end of the current season. Little has been said about the upcoming storyline for season 6, beyond it resolving the cliffhanger ending of season 5 that saw Brainiac-5 near death and Lex Luthor having stolen the power of the alien group Leviathan.

Black Lightning

Black Lightning is notable among the Arrowverse series in that it films in Atlanta rather than Vancouver. Nothing has been said about the series starting filming yet, despite it being scheduled for a January premiere on The CW. There have also been scant details regarding season 4’s storyline, beyond the fact that crime-boss Tobias Whale will be playing a bigger role in the proceedings of this season and speculation that Jefferson Pierce will be tackling a new job teaching at a special school for metahuman teenagers.

Batwoman

Out of all the shows in the Arrowverse, Batwoman may be the most highly anticipated. With the controversial series introducing Javicia Leslie as an original character named Ryan Wilder, who is taking over the mantle of the Bat from Kate Kane as the show’s sophomore season opens, many are wondering how the show can continue when so much of the season 1 storyline was based around Kate Kane’s character and her relationships. It remains to be seen if Batwoman will earn a third season, but filming on season 2 is confirmed to have started and the first pictures of Leslie in the Batwoman costume have been officially released to the press.

Superman and Lois

Superman and Lois will focus on the Man of Steel and his wife as they try to balance their roles as star reporters and parents, while also saving the world. The Supergirl spin-off is the only new Arrowverse series scheduled for the 2021 season so far. No footage from the show has been released, but a back-stage photo confirmed that filming has started and offered viewers the first glimpse at Lois and Clark’s Super Sons.

Green Arrow and The Canaries

This Arrow spin-off, centering around Oliver Queen’s daughter in the Star City of 2040, was presumed to be on the fast-track to be picked up as a new series. The pilot episode of Green Arrow and the Canaries was reportedly the highest rated episode of Arrow’s last season, even out-performing “Crisis On Infinite Earths – Part 4.” Despite this, Warner Bros. has yet to give the go ahead to start production on a new series. It is speculated this might be due to the underperformance of the Birds of Prey movie earlier this year and executives debating the wisdom of basing a television series around an all-women superhero team with ties to Black Canary.

Swamp Thing

Originally produced for the DC Universe streaming service, Swamp Thing was a critical hit that quickly became a one-season wonder. The show was mysteriously canceled with only a single episode having aired and its original production order being slashed from 13 episodes to 10, requiring the final episodes be drastically reworked at the last moment. Despite this, The CW has picked up the first season of Swamp Thing to air starting in October and CW President Mark Pedowitz has said that he is open to the possibility of picking up the show where it left off if the reruns do well. While this is a slim hope and would almost certainly see the horror series operating under stricter guidelines and a smaller budget, many fans would love to see the show return and finish its story in any capacity.

Stargirl

Originally produced for the DC Universe streaming series, Stargirl was picked up by The CW as a summer series to fill a programing gap created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The series proved popular enough for The CW to make a bid to bring the series to The CW starting with its second season. Nothing has been said about when the show will start production, but it has been confirmed that Season 2 will see the new Justice Society of America battling the villain Eclipso.
