Arrowverses Martian Manhunter Reveal Makes Him A More Tragic Hero

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Supergirl season 6, episode 12, “Blind Spots.”

A recent episode of Supergirl revealed the tragic reason why the Arrowverse Martian Manhunter had adopted the persona of a Black man, despite possessing shapeshifting powers that could potentially allow him to look like anyone. “Blind Spots” revealed that J’onn J’onzz chose to live as a Black man so he did not forget how it felt to be an outsider on Earth.

The introduction of Martian Manhunter (David Harewood) into the cast of Supergirl was something of a surprise. It was first revealed that the last Green Martian had been posing as DEO Director Hank Henshaw for several years and been watching over both Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) to repay the debt he owed their father in the Supergirl season 1 episode “Human For A Day.” However, J’onn continued to wear Henshaw’s face, even after his secret identity was exposed. He originally claimed it was for the benefit of his fellow DEO agents who were used to seeing him as Hank Henshaw, but Supergirl recently revealed that Martian Manhunter had another reason for continuing to wear Henshaw’s face.

The Supergirl season 6 episode “Blind Spots” primarily focused on Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai) and her efforts to save several National City citizens from the schemes of a corrupt city council member as the new Guardian while the other Super Friends were occupied with capturing the rogue imp Nyxlygsptlnz. After Kelly vented her frustrations to her friends regarding their being so focused on the big picture that they couldn’t help her with assisting the people indirectly injured by Nyxly’s rampage, Alex talked to J’onn in private regarding her fears that she hadn’t really been listening to her girlfriend and didn’t really understand her experiences as a Black woman. J’onn agreed that it was unlikely Alex could ever truly know what Kelly had gone through, before explaining that he chose to continue to live with Hank Henshaw’s face because he never felt more alien than when he posed as a Black man.

J’onn explained that while he came to Earth as a refugee after fleeing a race war between the White Martians and Green Martians and had always been “more Martian than anything,” he felt the need to continue feeling like an outsider despite having the ability to fit in anywhere. This was because J’onn wanted to make sure he never truly became comfortable with the idea of Earth being his home, so he did not forget who he was or where he came from. However, he also recognized he was fortunate to be able to make that choice when other heroes who suffered discrimination (like Black Lightning and both Guardians) did not.

Science fiction has often been used as a metaphor for real-world issues and the Supergirl Martian Manhunter’s story is one that is uniquely American. The United States was founded on the idea that anyone could come to America and start a new life, yet the reality is that many American immigrants struggle with finding acceptance in their new home and finding the balance between adapting to a new culture and simultaneously honoring their roots. This is the cruel irony of Martian Manhunter’s life, in the Arrowverse and the comics. Despite having the power to blend into any crowd, J’onn J’onzz can never truly feel like he belongs anywhere.
