The Assassin’s Creed franchise has had many protagonists, been set in many places and times, and has constantly evolved its combat and mechanics. One of the few elements of the series that has managed to exist throughout almost every game, however, is the iconic weapon, the hidden blade. But as Ubisoft has slowly redefined what an Assassin’s Creed game is, it is has struggled to figure out how to handle this core element.

Hidden blades have been part of the Assassin’s Creed franchise since the very first game. As the name suggests, the design of the weapon allows the wearer to get close to a target without anyone detecting a threat by essentially strapping a spring blade to the underside of an Assassin’s arm. The hidden blade is key to Assassin’s Creed mythology, as it is the reason that many early members of the Brotherhood are missing a ring finger; they cut off that finger to allow a blade to easily extend and retract from the hidden holster. The weapon was eventually modified over time to avoid this amputation, but some Assassins still brand or tattoo their left ring finger in tribute to the sacrifice.

The hidden blade was an essential element of Assassin’s Creed’s early identity. It was the central way players eliminated targets, with the hidden blade guaranteeing players a one hit kill if they could get close enough to the target and catch them unawares. That mechanic remained a constant until Assassin’s Creed Origins, the same time that Ubisoft radically changed the Assassin’s Creed formula. Assassin’s Creed Origins was the first true open world Assassin’s Creed game, with combat pushed in the direction of an action RPG. As the game shifted to much more aggressively pursuing ability tress and items with stat bonuses, the hidden blade had to change. That meant the weapon was no longer a guarantee one hit kill. While minions could still be eliminated in one hit, key targets would only instead take a hefty amount of damage from stealth attacks.

Why Assassin’s Creed’s Hidden Blade is No Longer Important

Starting with Assassin’s Creed Origins, Ubisoft has been attempting to redefine what an Assassin’s Creed game even is. The franchise has drastically shifted to focus on combat, with stealth becoming less and less important. The hidden blade was created when Assassin’s Creed was a game about making kills as inconspicuously as possible. But since the franchise has become an action RPG, it’s much easier for players to simply storm an enemy fort and defeat their targets in open combat. This change in gameplay has left Ubisoft in an awkward spot with the hidden blade. The weapon is integral to the game’s identity, but it’s no longer truly necessary for actual game play. The option to one hit kill what is essentially a boss doesn’t fit with the new version of Assassin’s Creed, and Ubisoft seems to mostly keep the weapon in the games out of a need for continuity.

Ubisoft attempted to return to its roots in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla by making the hidden blade a one hit weapon again, but only if players toggled a specific option in the menus, and even then they would get a warning that it would disrupt the intended balance of the game. This compromise encapsulates where Ubisoft currently stands with the hidden blade: it understands fans of the original games want a specific experience, and Ubisoft is trying to provide the option for them, but the guaranteed one hit kill hidden blade no longer fits with Ubisoft’s intended vision of Assassin’s Creed gameplay. While the hidden blade will likely never completely disappear from Assassin’s Creed, it may see a continued decline as Ubisoft continues to redefine the franchise.
