Assassins Creed Syndicate Sales Are Down; Ubisoft Blames Unity

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, the ninth major installment in the titular franchise from video game developer Ubisoft, has seen unprecedented critical acclaim since its late October 2015 release, with most reviewers claiming the title is a true return to form following the glitchy mess that was Assassin’s Creed Unity. For many players, Syndicate, with its Victorian era, London setting, and featuring real-life British thinkers Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin, has been a slam dunk, with gameplay focused on its historical setting and fraternal twin assassins.

Regardless of how much fun Jacob and Evie Frye have afforded early adopters of the latest Assassin’s Creed title, however, Ubisoft may not come out on top of the pile in terms of sales within the immediate future, as the shadow cast by Unity in November 2014 continues to loom large over sales of the blockbuster product.

According to a recent company investors call (courtesy of Gamespot), the technical issues that plagued the last franchise instalment may have had an effect on sales during the course of the first week of the new game’s release. Studio CEO, Alain Martinez, was quick to offer a verbal assessment reflecting the company’s latest earnings report, remarking that Syndicate’s performance was indeed causally affected “by what had happened with Assassin’s Creed Unity.”

Offered as a rejoinder to such disparaging remarks, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot remarked on the aforementioned positive reviews for the new release, drawing attention to its total play-time being “massively up” compared to Ubisoft’s last release, with digital sales representing the fact that “all key metrics” showed respective improvement over Unity. It’s also worth noting that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which released in October 2013, eventually moved a total of 10 million units by the end of December 2014 – a trend that Syndicate may well follow as reflected by the rebounding sales enjoyed in its second week release.

Whether or not Syndicate will ever reach the heights of Black Flag’s gradual climb to the top has yet to be seen, though the precedent has been set, and given the strong word of mouth about the game that has been building since its release, more players might just give the new game a shot. Despite Unity’s technically challenged launch, Ubisoft’s latest offering for fanatics of the age-old war between the Assassins and Templars in-game might just be the best the series has had to offer yet, pending further consumer approval, of course.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is currently available to purchase from all participating retailers for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
