Assassins Creed Valhalla and Immortals Fenyx Rising Prove Far Cry 6s Delay is a Good Thing

While 2020 has been an interesting year in the world of gaming releases, one developer has managed to ship several titles despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Ubisoft has managed to not only ship major titles like Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Immortals Fenyx Rising, but make major announcements for the development plans of new titles like Far Cry 6 and Rainbow Six Quarantine. And while these announcements were met by enthusiasm from Ubisoft fans, the developer had to recently provide some unfortunate news.

At the end of October, it was announced by Ubisoft that it would be delaying both Far Cry 6 and Rainbow Six Quarantine until after April of 2021 due to “production challenges caused by COVID-19.” The latest installment of the Far Cry series was originally slated to release on February 18, 2021, and little was known about the intended release date for the Rainbow Six spin-off besides initially being projected for 2020. This delay for Far Cry 6 has likely been disappointing for fans of the popular Far Cry series; however, it seems probable that Ubi enthusiasts are breathing a sigh of relief.

2020 has been a big year for lengthy open-world games, with titles like the celebrated Ghost of Tsushima and highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 occupying many players’ time. Ubisoft hasn’t helped with this “problem” either as it has released three major open-world games recently, namely the aforementioned Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Immortals Fenyx Rising. The shortest of these three experiences is Immortals, with players reporting completionist runs of the game taking around 40 hours to complete.

Even players that have spent over 200 hours playing all three of these games will likely want a long break before Far Cry 6 releases. Had it stuck with it’s original release in February, players would have only had two and a half months to see everything there is to see in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This delay until after April 2021 will give many players the opportunity to fully experience these games at an enjoyable pace.

And there’s a lot to discover in these worlds. It seems like every day players are finding new secrets and Easter Eggs within Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Some Easter Eggs include nods to other prolific series such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. While secret searching won’t be a priority for every player, those that do enjoy such activities now can survey all of England to their hearts’ content.

This delay also gives Ubisoft the benefit of an extended marketing plan. For some players, entering into a franchise on the sixth entry can be a bit intimidating. These players might feel like they have no idea of what to expect from the series in regards to gameplay or what type of story could be told. Ubisoft will now have plenty of time to reveal details about Far Cry 6’s setting of Esperanza, as well as the imposing figure that is Anton Castillo.

Far Cry 6 is expected to release in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
