John McClane may be the everyman face of the Die Hard franchise, but he’s surrounded by memorable sidekicks and villains in each of his action movies.

Five movies in, the Die Hard franchise has given the action genre some of its best and worst entries of all time. Each movie, barring the fifth and (by far) most terrible one of the bunch, has added a handful of fresh new faces to the ensemble. From sidekicks to villains, there are always new characters to enjoy.
Obviously, the most iconic character from the franchise is its hero, John McClane, played with everyman grit by Bruce Willis. Few Die Hard fans will be surprised to see McClane topping this list. But there are a ton of other great characters populating his world.
10 Richard Thornburg
In the first Die Hard movie, the McClanes really got screwed over by Richard Thornburg’s reckless reporting. Holly socked him in the face, and in the second movie, as the two find themselves on the same flight that’s unable to land, it’s revealed that he took out a restraining order against her following the punch.
Thornburg is a really frustrating character without a single likable quality, but his back-and-forth with Holly in Die Hard 2 was a lot of fun.
9 Harry Ellis
Most of Holly’s co-workers are perfectly professional, but Harry Ellis is a coke-snorting maniac who hilariously thinks he’s a lot smarter than he actually is.
McClane gets furious at Ellis because he thinks he can defuse the situation with the terrorists, but he just makes it much, much worse.
8 Simon Gruber
In the first act of Die Hard with a Vengeance, a terrorist starts a game of “Simon Says…” with life-or-death stakes, specifically calling out a hungover McClane to play.
At first, no one has any idea who Simon is. However, during the second act, it’s revealed that he’s the brother of Hans Gruber, out for revenge. This raised the stakes, tied together the franchise’s continuity, and added a personal vendetta angle to the hero/villain dynamic.
7 Lucy McClane
While Jai Courtney’s portrayal of McClane’s all-grown-up son in A Good Day to Die Hard was a crushing disappointment, Mary Elizabeth Winstead gave a terrific performance as his all-grown-up daughter in Live Free or Die Hard.
Throughout the movie, their relationship goes from typically estranged to closer than ever. Instead of family therapy, all they need is a deranged hacker threatening both of their lives.
6 Argyle
Argyle is the limo driver who picks up McClane at the airport in L.A. and drives him to his wife’s office Christmas party. Their conversation on the drive over reveals that McClane’s relationship with his wife is strained and Argyle agrees to wait in the parking lot in case things turn sour quickly and McClane needs to get out of there.
He ends up getting trapped in the parking lot during the terrorist takeover and later becomes integral in stopping the bad guys as he crashes his limo into their getaway vehicle.
5 Holly Gennaro-McClane
McClane has never had a good relationship with his wife. The last time Holly appeared in the movies, she was on the other end of a phone call that McClane abandoned when he figured out where Simon Gruber was going.
Bonnie Bedelia has always brought a dry charm to the role of Holly, making her a perfect foil for Bruce Willis, and fans always rooted for their struggling marriage to work out.
4 Zeus Carver
Although Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson had previously co-starred in Pulp Fiction, they didn’t share any scenes. They didn’t get to unearth their fantastic on-screen chemistry until Jackson was cast as McClane’s “buddy cop” sidekick in Die Hard with a Vengeance.
They first cross paths when McClane is being forced to wear a racist sandwich board in Harlem. Zeus steps in to save McClane from being killed and ends up getting swept along for the ride.
3 Hans Gruber
Alan Rickman provided the definitive portrayal of an Eastern European action movie villain in Die Hard with his performance as Hans Gruber, the German terrorist who takes over Nakatomi Plaza with the intention of stealing a boatload of money from a greedy corporation.
From murdering Takagi to calling McClane “Roy Rogers” to pretending to be an American hostage, Hans is an iconic character, played deftly by Rickman, who stole every scene.
2 Al Powell
During the terrorist takeover of Nakatomi Plaza, none of the cops on the ground will give McClane the time of day — except for Al Powell, the first responder. To stop him from leaving, McClane tosses a corpse onto the hood of Al’s squad car.
Their walkie-talkie conversations are among the most entertaining scenes in the movie, with Bruce Willis and Reginald VelJohnson developing an on-screen rapport without being face-to-face.
1 John McClane
There is no greater character in the Die Hard saga — and maybe in the entire action genre — than John McClane. Bruce Willis played McClane as a true everyman; the perfect antidote to the musclebound supermen played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in other ‘80s actioners.
McClane talks to himself when he gets flustered. He cuts his feet on broken glass. He doesn’t like himself all that much, but he’s doing his best. McClane is far more relatable than the average action movie protagonist.
