Assassins Creed Valhalla Why Eivor Joins the Assassins

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has been leaning hard on selling the ultimate Viking experience to players, showing them how they’ll raid the countryside and establish a new home for their warriors. A recent story trailer finally shed some light on the other big conflict in the game: the war between the Assassins and the Templars.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been set in several locations and eras and had just as many protagonists. But one of the key elements binding the Assassin’s Creed games together is the war between the Assassins and the Templars. These two secret groups have been at war for millenia, sometimes under different names. The Templars seeks to control and dominate humanity to lead them to a more perfect world, while the Assassins believe in free will and the power to make one’s own destiny. While Ubisoft revealed early that the famed Assassin weapon, the Hidden Blade, would be returning to the franchise, they’ve been fairly quiet about the Assassin side of the story.

The new story trailer from Ubisoft shows that the Assassins play a larger role in Eivor’s decision to invade England than players may have initially thought. Sigurd, Eivor’s brother, returns home from raiding bring riches and “new friends.” Although not identified by name, the newcomers are wearing the distinctive Assassin pointed hood, and present a Hidden Blade weapon among their gifts. Sigurd then pitches the Vikings that it’s time to move on to a new kingdom for their people: England. But once the Vikings have established a foothold, the Assassins reveal there is another threat the Vikings must fight if they want to keep their newly acquired land. Again, no names are mentioned, but the emphasis on the religious cross of the villains sets them up to be the Templars.

Did the Assassins Manipulate the Vikings into Invading England?

All of this indicates that perhaps the Assassins manipulated the Vikings into coming to England purely to have an ally against the Templars. The mysterious unnamed Assassin who returned with Sigurd to Norway is shown watching while Sigurd makes his pitch, indicating this was part of his plan. That same Assassin is the one who warns Eivor of a threat “bound to England’s destiny and to yours.” Past Assassin’s Creed games have usually relied on a personal tragedy to motivate the player Assassin to go to war, but this trailer makes the case that Eivor will join the Assassins to protect the new home he is setting up for his people. Perhaps if the Templars had gotten to the Vikings first, Eivor would have fought on their side instead.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is a game that seems ready to live in a moral grey area where there are no good guys and bad guys. Players will be a Viking defending his people, but they will be doing so in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla by invading another land and raiding innocent villages. The players know the Assassins as the “good guys,” but here the Assassins seem to be manipulating the player and the rest of the Vikings for their own gain. Everyone’s true motivations will finally come to light when Assassin’s Creed Valhalla releases in November.
