Assassins Creed Valhalla Xbox Store Page Was Missing Standard Edition

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla released today on Xbox Series X/S, but only its Gold and Ultimate Editions were readily listed for purchase on Xbox Store page. The $70 Standard Edition ($60 on current-gen consoles and PC) was nowhere to be found at launch on Xbox consoles, as only the $99.99 Gold Edition and $119.99 Ultimate Edition pop up on the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla store pages.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the twelfth mainline entry into the Assassin’s Creed series, and, at least so far, reviews are generally positive (save for its many bugs). The title takes very ambitious steps in improving its story and combat, resulting in a seemingly overall enjoyable gameplay experience for many players. With all this positive press, combined with a lack of first-party titles, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is shaping up to be a game that many players will end up sinking a lot of hours into this generation.

However, Xbox players had significant trouble getting into the game on the dual Xbox Series X/S and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launch day. To top off Xbox Live crashing at the dawn of the new generation, Redditor Bleuy007 shared on the Xbox Series X subreddit noticed that the game’s store page was only yielding the Gold and Ultimate Editions, which run considerably more expensive at $100 and $120, respectively. To find the elusive Standard Edition, players had to actively search for the game’s title, then select the option to see all games, as the Standard Edition of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is mysteriously listed as completely separate game. The issue has since been resolved, but it was present for hours and no doubt affect some players’ day-one purchase decisions, if not having more or less forced them into bigger purchases than they counted on.

It’s unsure why this was the case; it could have easily been a simple glitch or oversight. Still, with some players already being annoyed with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s cosmetic microtransactions, it is not a good look to put the more expensive versions of the game on full display while obscuring the regular price edition away. The game includes several new and well received features and abilities, so it is likely that this will end up as a minor hiccup in an otherwise successful launch, but time will tell.

Again, it is highly unlikely that the Standard Edition was intentionally made more troublesome to find, instead simply being the result of a quirk on Xbox’s end. However, it is interesting to wonder how many copies the Gold and Ultimate Editions will ultimately sell, as many people across the world remain financially strapped by ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Developer and publisher Ubisoft has had an underwhelming few years critically, and the hope is that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be the first step in righting the ship, but this isolated incident has made for one of the messiest console generation launch days in recent memory.
