Atlantis: The Lost Empire was one of Disney’s more underrated films from the 2000s. It has since become a bit of a cult favorite though, with a lot of talk surrounding the possibility that the film will receive a live-action adaptation.
While the movie wouldn’t be the normal choice for Disney executives to consider, there’s a lot of great aspects to the movie and its sequel, that the live-action iteration could explore. There are also so many elements that audiences would love to see from the remake, that captures the very essence of what made the first film so great.
10 Accurate Casting
The casting is so crucial for this film to really work. In the past one of the things that have really worked for these live-action films is that the casting has been pretty perfect.
Sometimes the studio decides on well-known names, whereas other times they cast an unexpected lead. People have been suggesting Tom Holland as Milo for many years, which could be a great fit for the lead.
9 An Unforgettable City
The design of Atlantis itself needs to be pretty magical. Previously the fictional locations of Disney films have been realized pretty well, with Agrabah as one such example of a realistic interpretation.
The city of Atlantis has appeared on screen many times before, but not quite in the way Disney first developed it. It will be important for the lost Empire to visually look like nothing else seen on screen before.
8 Sequel Setup
The original film did get a direct to video sequel which left a lot to be desired. While it did open up this world a little more, it couldn’t match the first one in terms of quality.
Disney would have an opportunity here to set up a sequel and improve upon its predecessor. There’s so much more to show to audiences that it would be a shame to have a glaring missed opportunity.
7 Further Exploration
As the team travels to the forgotten city of Atlantis, they journey through the depths of the Earth and come across species and civilizations that humanity never even knew existed.
For the live-action adaptation this element needs to be expanded further. The exploration is one of the most exciting parts of the film and can only be enhanced by this new variation of the story.
6 A Killer Score
There are some truly epic moments in the original soundtrack of The Lost Empire. However, compared to some of Disney’s other offerings the music is somewhat lacking.
This is an opportunity to re-score the production, laying down elements that pay tribute to the first while making the overall soundtrack become far more memorable; asides from the huge musical moments during the exploration scenes.
5 Lead Chemistry
At its heart, Atlantis is a film about a romance. The chemistry between the leads has to be palpable. The sacrifices made by the key characters won’t be believable without this chemistry.
The film could fall apart if the casting process doesn’t allow for some kind of chemistry test. Great movies have been made even better due to the dual performances of the stars; in this case Milo and Princess Kida.
4 Mystical Tone
The tone of the film has to be perfect. The franchise is based on more mystical elements, breaking down traditional science fiction. If the live-action adaption moves away from this there could be a problem.
To get the right tone of this classic animated film, there has to be an assurance that the more mythological elements of the film won’t be replaced for something a little more scientific.
3 Practical Sets And Effects
An exciting prospect to bring this franchise to life is by using practical props and effects. While this will likely be a visual effects-heavy film, a lot could be achieved in-camera.
Vast portions of Atlantis itself could feasibly be made practically and the use of an LED screen accompanied by physical elements would make the animation adaptation truly special.
2 Developed Characters
The supporting characters in the original film have a lot of gimmicks but very few moments for character development. While the majority of the group stick by Milo, this is not enough to explore their personalities.
The best Disney films manage to incorporate a large supporting cast that is equally developed as their leads. The live-action version can ensure some color is added to their personalities.
1 Understanding Of The Lore
The lore of this land is so important for the story to work. In both the original and the sequel the mythology of Atlantis is set out very clearly. In many ways, Disney+ is a prime location for the film and a spin-off.
This way, the streaming service could be used to create series and sequels that look at Atlantis further and continue to expand this magical world of treasure hunting and exploration of other mysterious lands under the Earth and seas.
