Attack On Titan 10 Harsh Realities Of Being Sasha Braus

Surviving in the universe of Attack On Titan is incredibly difficult, no matter how skilled of a soldier a character is. Even though they tried to simply ignore the chaos beyond the walls, that peace was inevitably shattered and many lives were lost, as seen with the Fall of Shiganshina. The most skilled of soldiers still have their weaknesses that can be exploited, such as Mikasa and her weakness involving Eren.

Even characters who are delegated more for comic relief at the beginning face their fair share of harsh realities attempting to confront the Titans and the world they live in. A great example of this is Sasha Braus, who starts as an odd-yet-likable character who provides a much-needed lighthearted tone to the series.

10 She’s Embarrassed About Her Origins & Actively Tries To Hide Them From Others

Sasha originates from the small village of Dauper, a remote and scarcely populated village in the southern part of Wall Rose. Due to this, she has a pretty heavy local accent, and she goes to great lengths to try to hide this from others.

It’s noted that she’s embarrassed by her upbringing and doesn’t want any of her comrades to judge her because of it. This leads to Sasha using an overly-formal way of speaking, one that other cadets still pick up on and call her out for.

9 She Joins The Military After Conflict With Her Father, Not Because She Wants To

Attack On Titan 10 Harsh Realities Of Being Sasha Braus

There are countless examples of characters within Attack On Titan who join the military because they want to, even if they don’t all want to fight Titans specifically. Eren wants to eradicate all Titans and takes his military training in stride despite setbacks, and characters like Marco want to loyally serve the King.

When it comes to Sasha, though, she doesn’t join out of a sense of duty or vengeance. Rather, she resents that her village is essentially being forced to give up their traditional lifestyle, and she doesn’t get support from her family when she wants to stand her ground. As an act of rebellion, she chooses to leave and join the military.

8 Her Upbringing Causes Her To Have A Compulsive Problem With Hoarding Food

Originally, Sasha’s attitude towards food feels like something that’s really only thrown in to add to her presence as a comedic relief character. However, given her background — being from a small village where food is scarce and hunting is necessary — things are better put into perspective.

However, this also makes it pretty upsetting that these scenes where she steals and hoards food are really only played as comedic moments. It’s something she can’t control due to her past and should be treated with a bit more respect.

7 She’s Originally Timid & Prone To Making Mistakes Under Pressure

When Sasha first enlists in the military, she has a hard time keeping her cool despite the fact that she has pinpoint accuracy thanks to her hunter upbringing. She’s prone to making mistakes under pressure and has quite a timid disposition.

This can mainly be attributed to the fact that she grew up secluded and cut off from most other people. She also doesn’t enlist in the military out of a desire to do so, meaning she has many more mental adjustments to make compared to other cadets.

6 Outsiders Coming In & Hunting The Game That Used To Be Hers Threatens Her Way Of Life

One of the main reasons that Sasha leaves her home village and decides to enlist in the military is because her way of life begins to feel threatened. Outsiders start flocking to her small town and hunting the game that used to be hers, meaning less food to go around, and hunting overall starts to become a less viable way to survive.

She becomes incredibly aggravated towards those who she sees as infringing on her homeland and refuses to change her views for the greater good. Although it’s the sensible decision for her and her family to begin growing crops when hunting becomes less feasible, she instead becomes frustrated that they aren’t trying to protect the way of life she’s always known.

5 She Has Amazingly Accurate Archery Skills But Doesn’t Get To Utilize Them Until Much Later On

Due to her background in hunting, Sasha is a surprisingly accurate shot with the bow. She’s shown to have near-pinpoint accuracy, and this could have come in handy for things like disabling Titans so her squad can move in for the kill.

It makes sense that she’s still trained in using ODM Gear and its associated blades. However, it doesn’t make sense that it takes so long for the series to allow her to make use of these skills using bolt-action rifles.

4 She Dies Because Of Her Inability To Take The Lives Of Children

Over time, the cruel reality of being a soldier starts to become easier for Sasha. She admits that she doesn’t have as much of a problem taking others’ lives as she does when she first begins.

However, understandably, she finds it impossible to take the lives of civilians and especially children. While it makes perfect sense that she’d feel this way, it also leads to her ultimate downfall, as she dies at the hands of Gabi Braun after being unable to take aim and fire at her.

3 Her Intuition Combined With Unconventional Combat Practices Causes Other Cadets To Dislike Her

Because she grew up in a small village where it’s typical for people to hunt for themselves without considering things like teamwork, Sasha often butts head with others without meaning to. This can cause conflicts between her and other cadets.

A great example of this is whenever the cadets are practicing against Titan mannequins. Sasha tails Conny and Jean and swoops in to steal their kills once they locate them. She isn’t shown to be remorseful of this, either, as she simply ridicules Jean for complaining when he tries to call her out.

2 Moments After She Dreams Of Retaking Wall Maria And Raising Cattle, Trost Is Broken Into

Sasha and her fellow graduated trainees are assigned to maintain the cannons along Wall Rose. This is also when Sasha offers to share meat that she stole with the other cadets, and they begin to panic over what might happen if she’s found out.

She seems entirely unconcerned with this, though, and instead puts her energy into daydreaming about raising cows and sheep once they retake Wall Maria. However, immediately after, the Colossal Titan appears and breaks into Wall Rose, ultimately shattering that dream the moment it’s uttered.

1 She Messes Up Her Part Of The Supply Room Plan & Is Nearly Killed

Once Sasha and the others reach the headquarters during the Struggle For Trost, Armin devises a plan to retake the supply room so everyone can restock. Sasha is one of the seven soldiers selected to partake in the mission, with each member given a Titan to slay once they’re blinded by gunfire.

However, Sasha is unable to cut deeply enough into her Titan’s nape and it quickly turns to grab and kill her. If it weren’t for Mikasa’s quick reflexes saving her just in the nick of time, this would have been the end for her.
