Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game recently won Best Narrative at the Video Game Awards, and since its release, the game quickly won over fans with its fun gameplay and an expansive and unpredictable story filled with many easter eggs and references to the Marvel Universe.

On the surface, the game adapts many elements from James Gunn’s popular MCU movies, but with the help of Dan Abnett, the man who first redefined the Guardians of the Galaxy, the game blends elements from the comics and the movies to create an original experience for fans of the characters.

Comics

Mantis

While the MCU has portrayed Mantis as a naïve character with empathic abilities, her comic book counterpart is far more powerful. Her ability to see into the future made her an indispensable member of the team. She was also able to read and connect minds.

The video game adapts a bit of the no filter naivete of the MCU Mantis but merges that character with the one from the comics. This Mantis can see into multiple futures and timelines and often gets things mixed up,areans which often leads to some of the best quotes in Guardians of the Galaxy. Knowing that Gamora’s life would be better if she was with the Guardians, Mantis encourages her to join the ragtag team and, later in the game, helps Drax break free from the control of The Promise.

Cosmo

Cosmo has an all to brief cameo in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie as a dog in a spacesuit in the Collector’s museum. This good boy is the telepathic head of security for the floating celestial head/space station Knowhere. Created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, Cosmo was launched from Soviet Russia in the 1960s and drifted off into space only to arrive at Knowhere mutated by cosmic rays which developed into a powerful telepathic ability.

The game has a very faithful adaptation of Cosmo, even continuing the comic book tradition of Cosmo and Rocket not getting along. His role as security chief of Knowhere leads him into conflict with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Later in the game, after being possessed by The Church of Truth, the Guardians have to save Cosmo by reminding him of the life he has on Knowhere, which includes his puppies.

Peter Quill/Star-Lord

On the surface, the Peter Quill of the video game has more than a few things in common with the Chris Pratt version of the character, but the content of the game reveals his story is much more similar to his comic book counterpart. While Star-Lord has a few origins in the comics, some important elements have remained constant.

Like in the comics, Peter is half Spartax, implying that his father is J’Son and not Ego, the Living Planet. His guns, while somewhat resembling the design of the MCU, are much more powerful as he’s able to tap into different elemental powers. Some MCU elements are combined with his past, such as a reference to serving with Yondu and the Ravagers but with the extensive costumes available for Star-Lord, players can easily feel like they’re playing the comic version of the character.

Fin Fang Foom

Fin Fang Foom has been a Marvel comics mainstay for many decades. Often appearing as a giant dragon with purple shorts, Foom is a powerful Avengers-level threat.

Since Foom has not appeared in the MCU as of yet, the only place the game could pull from for this version was the comics. Unlike his comic book counterpart, he’s a more traditional dragon with a green hide and a purple underbelly. However, he’s incredibly powerful and capable of traveling through space with no help.

Niki Gold

Originally debuting in Marvel Presents #4, all the way back in 1976, Niki was the sixth member of the futuristic Guardians of the Galaxy. She was born on the planet Mercury in the 31st Century and has the power to expel flames as an offensive tactic. She was initially described as an offshoot of humanity, genetically engineered to survive on the harsh planet.

The young girl that players meet in the video game shares some similarities with her comic book counterpart. While her planet of origin is never stated, it is said that Ko-Rel found her as a young girl on Mercury during the great war that was fought 12 years earlier. Star-Lord is led to believe that she is his biological daughter but that’s revealed not to be the case. She does pose similar abilities to her comic book counterpart.

MCU

The Nova Corp

Traditionally, the Nova Corp is similar in concept to DC’s Green Lantern Corps. They’re a group of space cops who patrol the galaxy and are powered by an energy known as the Nova Force. James Gunn adapted the corps to fit a more traditional cop role. They still patrol and protect the galaxy but they need ships to fly around and don’t seem to have any special abilities like their comic book counterparts.

The game takes a more MCU approach to the corp. While the comic book version of the Worldmind is in the game, the corps members themselves don’t have any special abilities. Their “powers” come from special technology that is incorporated into their suits to give the players more variety in enemies to fight.

The Collector

Marvel often changes characters for their cinematic appearances to make them more digestible for the general audiences. For instance, in the comics, the Collector is an elder of the universe with an immense power who is billions of years old. In contrast, Benicio Del Toro’s version of the character doesn’t give the impression that he could take Thanos in a fight but is instead more interested in collecting artifacts for his museum.

The Collector doesn’t show up physically in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game but you can visit his museum on Knowhere. In this way, the character appears much closer to his MCU counterpart than his comic one. While the comic version of the character has various collections on starships across the galaxy, his MCU counterpart has one museum on the floating celestial head Knowhere.

Gamora

Marvels Guardians Of The Galaxy 5 Ways It Adapts the Comics & 5 Ways It Adapts the MCU

Even though Gamora’s MCU origin is similar to her comic origin, her abilities were decreased when she jumped mediums. Always the daughter of Thanos and always enhanced by him, in the comic she possesses a healing factor that allows her to survive in hostile environments and most attacks. Her strength, speed, and abilities were meant to rival the evil Adam Warlock, The Magus.

The Gamora of the video game has none of these comic powers and therefore skews closer to the MCU counterpart. While she was still raised by Thanos, her enhanced strength and agility wouldn’t rival Drax, let alone Adam Warlock. Even though she’s not as powerful as her comic character used to be, Gamora is still one of the powerful characters in the game.

The Music

Marvels Guardians Of The Galaxy 5 Ways It Adapts the Comics & 5 Ways It Adapts the MCU

When James Gunn adapted the Guardians of the Galaxy for the big screen, he included the element that Peter Quill’s main emotional attachment was to the music that his mother gave him before she died. So music ended up being a major part of both Guardians of the Galaxy films.

The game takes a similar approach to music. Instead of the music being something his mother gave him, music serves as a connection to Earth that he hung on to. The radio on the Milano and Peter’s tape deck is full of hits from the 80s. The music even plays a role in the game to get the other Guardians hyped up after a huddle. The game goes a step further to create a new band called Star-Lord, where Peter got his super-hero name from.

Drax The Destroyer

The MCU changed Drax the Destroyer from a human named Arthur Douglass who died and was reborn as a powerful creature who had enhanced strength, flight, and laser beams that he could shoot from his hands to an alien who lost his family to Thanos and took everything literally.

That’s the character we meet in the video game. After having lost his family to Thanos, Drax goes on a rampage through the universe to kill him. He succeeds in that mission and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. Later in the game, Drax’s desire to give into the promise leads the Guardians to head into his mind to try and save him.
