New Star Wars Comic Hints At Battlefront 2 Connection

An upcoming Star Wars miniseries is hinting at a direct connection to Battlefront II. Although it’s been several years since Marvel’s Star Wars titles began, there is still a lot in the galaxy for stories to explore.

It’s frequently fallen on the comics to expand on the films, especially elements for which the Disney Lucasfilm era has barely scratched the surface. Two of the most notable groups from recent movies will converge in Star Wars: Crimson Reign, which incorporates Crimson Dawn and the Knights of Ren. Both the fate of the crime syndicate in Solo: A Star Wars Story and the dark side users from the Sequel Trilogy were largely left a mystery for audiences. The five-issue limited series written by Charles Soule with art by Steve Cummings will release in November, but artwork is already giving fans a glimpse of what to expect.

As Crimson Dawn and the Knights of Ren cross paths for the first time, Crimson Reign is also making a connection to Battlefront II. The variant cover for the upcoming miniseries illustrated by Rio Anindito features a TIE pilot with Inferno Squad branding. In a prequel novel for the game titled Battlefront II: Inferno Squad, the “heroes of the Empire” received the spotlight, following the events of Rogue One. Following their loss to the rebels, the TIE pilots had to regain their status as the Empire’s most skilled soldiers. Now, it seems their adventures continue alongside Crimson Dawn as led by Qi’ra, and the early iteration of the Knights of Ren.

Set after The Empire Strikes Back and picking up from the War of the Bounty Hunters event, there is plenty of territory for the miniseries to cover. The Inferno Squad might not be front and center, but their inclusion should signal that Soule is taking advantage of this time period in the Star Wars universe. However, with the limited information that has been unveiled, the Inferno Squad could prove essential to the journeys of both the Knights of Ren and Qi’ra’s Crimson Dawn. As the Empire approaches their defeat in Return of the Jedi, the squad could have an early demise foreshadowing the second Death Star’s fate.

With these three antagonistic groups intersecting with Crimson Reign, it’s possible that more familiar characters could show up. At this point in the galaxy, the Hutts and Black Sun are just a few notable crime syndicates that are active. Prince Xizor was previously referenced in War of the Bounty Hunters in relation to Crimson Dawn’s origin story, and has yet to be explored in current canon. Originally appearing in Star Wars’ first major multimedia project Shadows of the Empire, Xizor joins Admiral Thrawn on the Mount Rushmore of expanded universe stories. The recent cameo of the original human Jabba could also make an appearance, as he has a syndicate of his own. For now, fans can only count on Battlefront II’s Inferno Squad to make another appearance in Star Wars: Crimson Reign later this year.
