Who is Attack On Titan’s creepy Smiling Titan and what is its eventual fate? Hajima Isayama’s Attack On Titan manga has created a hugely popular franchise, which includes an acclaimed anime series, video games, and two live-action movies. The anime debuted in 2013 and sees a walled city besieged by giant maneaters dubbed Titans. Protagonist Eren Yeager signs up with the Survey Corps to fight back following the grisly death of his mother, and in doing so uncovers the origins of the Titans, the truth behind his city and his own connections to the Titans.

Attack On Titan makes for addictive viewing and is helped by a cast of memorable heroes and villains, surprising plot twists, and great action. There’s long been talk of a Hollywood adaptation of the franchise with IT director Andy Muschietti currently attached. The movie doesn’t seem to be moving forward anytime soon, while Muschietti is also set to helm an adaptation of cult video game Shadow Of The Colossus, so hopefully, he’ll get to scratch his itch to direct a film about giant monsters soon.

One of the defining moments of Attack On Titan is Eren seeing his mother Carla Jaeger eaten by the eerie giant known as the Smiling Titan. As the name implies, this Titan is known for the nightmare grin plastered to its face, and while it only really appears twice in the entire series it definitely leaves an impression. The show eventually revealed the history behind this Titan, revealing its original human form to be Dina Fritz, the first wife of Eren’s father Grisha.

Dina’s backstory in Attack On Titan requires a little history lesson and she belongs to a race known as the Eldians, who once waged a destructive war using the power of the Titans. They were finally bested by the nation of Marley, who were able to seize the power of the Titans for themselves, leading the Eldian King to exile himself and his people to Paradis Island. The Eldians who stayed behind – including Grisha and Dina, a member of the royal family – were oppressed and put into ghettos. They ally themselves to the Eldian Restorationists, who want to use the power of the Founding Titan to bring down Marley from within.

Dina and Grisha later marry and have a son named Zeke, who eventually betrays them to the Marley government. The couple and other restorationists are then taken to Paradis Island and one by one they’re turned into Pure Titans following injections with the Titan serum. This causes Dina to turn into the Smiling Titan – making it somewhat disturbing she eventually devoured Carla, Grisha’s second wife in Attack On Titan’s opening episode. Five years after the Smiling Titan killed his mother, Eren encounters it again during a battle and after watching it eat another friend, he’s able to punch its hand away as it tries to grab him too.

This unlocked a new ability within Eren’s own Titan Shifter form, and he’s able to direct the surrounding Titans to attack and take down the Smiling Titan, who still smiles as its torn apart. Given the tragic backstory of Attack On Titan’s Dina, Eren’s revenge is less satisfying in hindsight.
