Attack on Titans Levi was Actually Inspired by a Classic DC Hero

An interview with Attack On Titan creator Hajime Isayama reveals the true inspiration behind popular character Levi Ackerman is actually Watchmen’s own Rorschach. The mangaka was interviewed for men’s magazine Brutus on the success of Attack On Titan and his many inspirations geared toward the fan-favorite character.

The well-renowned manga was first serialized in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009 and only recently concluded with its final chapter 139 on April 9th. The final Volume 34 is currently available for pre-order and releases on October 19. In a world where monsters known as Titans roam the land, Eren Yeager with friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlet, join the Survey Corps with a goal to exterminate all Titans. Survey Corps squad Captain Levi Ackerman is a character that fits the agenda of the yaoi fandom according to the Attack on Titan creator but his original inspiration came from one of DC’s darkest vigilante heroes.

In a 2014 interview with Brutus magazine, Hajime Isayama had this to say about the creation of the character:

“Levi is a character I accidentally created while idly doodling, and I, of course, knew I had something. Then I saw Watchmen, and the character Rorschach really stuck with me and I decided I wanted to try doing a similar character, so I combined him with that doodle.”. The mangaka went on to add that he knew the character would be popular amongst yaoi fangirls and responded with, “I was going for something similar to Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho, and the moment I finished his design I knew I had something good.”

Levi’s personality resembles a lot of the lone wolf private eye detective with both characters sharing the same acts of violence and antisocial behaviors. In the 2009 Zack Snyder film Watchmen, Rorschach solves crimes with detective work and various torcher techniques. When Rorschach interrogated Moloch for information on the Comedian he used torture tactics like breaking fingers and using arm holds to subdue the retired villain. Similarly, Levi also uses violent tactics not only to defeat Titans but to get information out of people as he did with Hange to Sannes after ripping his nail beds apart for information on Eren and Historia. He’s known to give very violent kicks to subordinates (mainly Eren) and criminals which also adds to his yaoi popularity.

What Levi and Rorschach share in violence they make up for in their loyalty to friends. Rorschach made it his job to solve the mysterious killer targeting his friends and can even be seen throughout the movie-watching over them in his civilian identity. Levi is also very loyal to his comrades which is a common trait amongst Ackerman members but his loyalty was especially strong in his relationship with Commander Erwin. Portraying Levi Ackerman after Watchmen’s Rorschach is exactly what makes him such a fan-favorite character in Attack On Titan.
