One of the reasons Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have gained such popularity is because of the unique and objectively cool bending of the four elements as a martial art combat style seen in both series. No other show or movie has anything quite like this, and that’s a quality that elevates the Avatar universe.

Beyond just the manipulation of the basic four elements of fire, water, earth, and air, talented benders can also learn specialized bending techniques that allow them to unlock new abilities, like healing, or even a new form of bending entirely, like metalbending. Let’s take a look at some of these techniques and how they stack up against each other.

10 Spiritual Projection (Airbending)

At this point in the Avatar universe, spiritual projection is an incredibly rare ability that only Jinora has been able to achieve. As quoted by her, it is “a high-level airbender move. With a little spiritual stuff thrown in.” Jinora’s strong and unique connection to the spirit world is likely the reason why she’s able to pull off this advanced airbending technique.

Having the ability to project your spirit to other locations is extraordinary, but ultimately not that useful of a skill except in rare scenarios.

9 Lightning Generation (Firebending)

First made popular by the infamous Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender, lightning generation has since become fairly common in the Avatar universe, as seen in The Legend of Korra when Mako goes to work at a power plant where firebenders are employed to generate lightning.

This is an incredibly powerful subskill of firebending that is highly potent and also highly dangerous for both the user and whoever the lightning is being targeted at. Because of its volatility, many fans are wary of taking on this specialized bending technique.

8 Spiritbending (Waterbending)

Spiritbending is a form of waterbending introduced in The Legend of Korra that allows powerful waterbenders to calm wild spirits and peacefully send them away. It can also be used to corrupt spirits, and even destroy a person’s soul. Due to the abundance of spirits in the Avatar world, fans believe this ability would come in handy.

That said, the effectiveness of spiritbending isn’t always a certainty, and spiritbending has also been seen to be ineffective against spirit vines.

7 Lavabending (Earthbending)

This ability doesn’t appear in the Avatar universe until the third season of The Legend of Korra, but lavabending is a highly formidable and strong subskill of earthbending. A lavabender user can overwhelm other benders quickly and inflict mass destruction, as seen when Ghazan demolishes a section of Ba Sing Se’s wall in a matter of seconds.

Putting aside destructive power though, lavabending lacks essentially any practical use which limits its favorability.

6 Combustionbending (Firebending)

Another potent and destructive ability, combustionbending was popularized by Combustionman in Avatar: The Last Airbender and then never seen again until season three of the Legend of Korra with P’Li. Being able to generate massive explosions from long-range gives combustionbenders an edge that allows them to overpower their opponents, even when outnumbered.

Like lavabending, combustionbending lacks the practicality of other bending subskills and also requires the user to have a chi spot on their forehead which acts as a point of weakness.

5 Seismic Sense (Earthbending)

Seismic sense is a Daredevil-like ability that allows earthbenders to detect vibrations in the area around them, being able to sense everything from enemies to the location of certain objects or people. This technique is what allows Toph to be able to “see”.

Besides the clearly obvious advantage of being able to track and predict your opponent’s movements without having to look at them, seismic sense also has many practical uses and would come in handy outside of combat scenarios.

4 Flight (Airbending)

Flight as an actual ability, as opposed to short bursts of flight sustained by firebenders or airbenders using gliders and wingsuits, is another very rare specialized bending technique. Besides a famed airbender from the past, the only person audiences have seen achieve this is Zaheer.

Although Korra was in a weakened state due to poisoning, Zaheer was still able to use this skill to take on Korra in the Avatar State. That is noteworthy. That aside, being able to fly is just downright awesome and would make travel a breeze.

3 Healing (Waterbending)

Although it lacks any combat applicability, the benefits and usefulness of healing speak for themselves. This ability has come in handy many times throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. To be honest, “come in handy” is putting things somewhat mildly considering that Katara literally saves Aang’s life with this skill.

It’s not as flashy as most of the other techniques on this list, but its advantages are undeniable.

2 Metalbending (Earthbending)

Metalbending has been shown to be one of the most powerful specialized bending techniques in part due to the abundance of metal in the now technologically advanced Avatar world, but also because of how metal is highly resilient and can withstand attacks from firebenders even during Sozin’s Comet.

Like flight and healing, metalbending also has great practical usage and can come in handy in everyday life. This is debatably the strongest and most useful bending subskill, but it’s outranked by an incredibly overpowered ability in the Avatar universe.

1 Bloodbending (Waterbending)

Don’t let the wording of “incredibly overpowered” come off as a negative, as bloodbending is a nearly universally loved waterbending subskill. That said, it is an overwhelmingly powerful ability that can dismantle and completely incapacitate any opponent the user faces, including non-humans.

Even an adult, fully-realized Avatar Aang was essentially helpless against bloodbending and was only able to defeat his enemy by entering the Avatar State and using energybending to take away his waterbending. Not quite as practical as some of the other entries on this list, bloodbending is still the most powerful specialized bending technique by a long shot and earns its spot at #1.
