Avatar: The Last Airbender: 5 Couples Fans Supported (& 5 They Rejected)

Of the many possible couples that were explored on Avatar: The Last Airbender, there were some fans supported and others that they rejected.

With Avatar: The Last Airbender still getting a lot of attention after being added to Netflix at the beginning of June, old fans are enjoying the show while many new fans are discovering it for the first time. Given that the characters in the series are pre-teens and teens, there are a lot of crushes, couples, and romances in the show.

Many fans of the show, especially those that were young when it first came out, had strong opinions on the relationships and who should date who. Of the many possible couples that were explored at one point or another, there were some that fans supported and others that they rejected.

10 Supported: Katara and Zuko

This might be one of the more controversial picks on this list because the debate about who Katara should be with was the biggest ship war in the fandom when the show aired. While obviously Katara didn’t end up with Zuko, and this is probably for the best, many fans felt this was the better option for Katara as her relationship with Aang felt a little one-sided.

But, the truth is that some fans supported this relationship while others wanted to see Katara with Aang.

9 Rejected: Katara and Aang

While Katara and Aang might be the canon couple that gets together in the end, and the one that is built towards as the series goes on, Aang always seemed way younger than Katara.

While their age difference of two years wouldn’t have mattered once they got a little older, it was more the difference in how they looked and the maturity level that made them seem off. This couple probably would have come across better if both characters had been slightly older in the series.

8 Supported: Oma and Shu

This is probably one of the more random couples on the list that people might not remember very well, but this relationship does come from one of the more iconic episodes. In season two, the episode “Cave of Two Lovers” told the story of how Oma and Shu built secret underground tunnels to meet one another.

Because of them, and because the badgermoles taught them, earthbending was created. There’s no denying that there was a powerful love story.

7 Rejected: Katara and Jet

Before the debate about Zuko and Aang, Katara had another love interest for a brief time. While Jet seemed like a smooth-talking, handsome freedom fighter who was a good guy, it turned out that he was taking things too far and didn’t dare about the loss of innocent lives in his desire to get back at the Fire Nation.

Understandably, Katara’s feelings for him went away really quickly, and fans also agreed that he wasn’t right for her. She definitely deserved better than him even if he did redeem himself in season two.

6 Supported: Zuko and Mai

Zuko and Mai had brief moments of crushes and a relationship before Zuko was banished by his father, and when Zuko joins back up with Azula, they rekindle this relationship.

Many fans liked these two together because they were both brooding characters that fans joked fit together because they were both a little “emo.” Just before Zuko is crowned they share a kiss, and many fans were glad they were the official canon couple.

5 Rejected: Sokka and Yue

While Sokka and Yue were briefly an endearing couple, they just weren’t meant to be. The fact that Yue turned into the moon is pretty sad in a way, and this obviously all impacted Sokka a lot as he did care about her.

However, by the time Sokka met Yue, he had already met Suki, and fans were even more interested in this relationship as the series went on.

4 Supported: Sokka and Boomerang

While this might be a more facetious inclusion on this list, there’s no denying that the connection between Sokka and his rusted boomerang was a recurring theme on the show. While it was definitely a bit of a joke, Sokka did rely on and love this trusted weapon that he’d had since his childhood.

As one of two non-benders in the group, Sokka had to rely a lot more on his weapons to protect himself, so he had a connection to Boomerang in a way that the others couldn’t quite understand. In a way, it was like his connection to an element.

3 Rejected: Zuko and Jin

Before Zuko ends up being with Me, he has a brief moment where it seems like he could have found love in the Earth Kingdom. When Zuko and Uncle Iroh are pretending to be Earth Kingdom refugees from the Fire Nation and working at a tea shop, a girl named Jin is interested in Zuko.

These two end up going on a rather adorable date, and Zuko even seems to want to make her happy and open up a little. While this was a cute moment, she clearly wasn’t right for Zuko, and fans weren’t invested in this relationship.

2 Supported: Sokka and Suki

One of the best couples from Avatar: The Last Airbender was Sokka and Suki. They were developed naturally over the seasons, and they were quite good together.

While at first Sokka was a jerk who needed to be put in his place regarding his outdated views on gender, he quickly changed his ways, and they became quite a pair. Most fans thought this couple made a lot of sense and supported them.

1 Rejected: Ozai and Ursa

While there were some couples between the teens on the show that fans didn’t like that much, the worst relationship of all that was ever featured was between Fire Lord Ozai and his wife Ursa.

While we only really see glimpses of Ursa in flashbacks, this relationship was clearly toxic, and Ursa didn’t support her husband’s evil ways. She even had to protect Zuko from being murdered by Ozai by poisoning Fire Lord Azulon, so clearly this relationship and the entire family was really messed up.
