Avatar The Last Airbender 5 Reasons It Needed A Fourth Season (& 5 It Doesnt)

No one likes to see a show end, especially one that’s as loved and adored as Avatar: The Last Airbender. When ATLA came to an end after it’s the third season, many fans begged studios to release another season, to continue the adventures of the Gaang and expand upon the world of ATLA.

Some fans, however, felt that the show was done, that the third season did provide a sense of finality to the show something that a fourth season could ruin. Here are five reasons why Avatar: The Last Airbender needs a fourth season and five why it doesn’t.

10 Needs: Continue the story

When Avatar reached its conclusion in the third season following the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai and his terrible plans to destroy the Earth Kingdom, the future of ATLA was very much in the unknown. There were many things unclear and details many fans would have loved to see happen.

A fourth season could fulfill fans’ wishes, providing a detailed look at the changing landscape of ATLA’s world, allowing them to watch it grow and evolve in the aftermath of Ozai’s rule, creating a better world.

9 Doesn’t: Stories completed

Sometimes, in Tv shows, less is better than more. Far too many times shows tend to go keep the story going past its expiration date. A lot of times, it’s better to end a show early, to preserve the tales that have already been told.

This is the case of ATLA, a story that was meant to be told over three seasons. A tale that follows the mission of Aang and his friends as they attempt to save the world. With the world saved, the show has completed its story.

8 Needs: Tie Up Loose Ends

Whether a show finishes its story or is canceled, there will always be some form of plot points that have still yet to be told. It’s the sad truth that these plotlines may never be resolved or the loose ends won’t be wrapped up.

While ATLA ended its show on a high note, it did leave behind a few plot points that left fans with more questions than answers, the most notable of which being about Zuko’s mother. A fourth season could finally answer the questions in a satisfying manner.

7 Doesn’t: Comics

It’s surprising to think that films and tv shows don’t just need the silver or small screens to thrive and grow. Literature and other forms of media can help to make sure that the already rich and vibrant worlds and stories continue to grow.

Following ATLA’s cancelation, a few years down the line a series of comics were and still are being released. The comics follow the continuing adventures of the Gaang, answering the questions left over from the original series in ways that a fourth season never could accomplish.

6 Needs: Explore The New World

When filmmakers have a world as interesting and unique as Avatar: The Last Airbender, the possibilities surrounding said world are endless. From the different kingdoms of each elemental to the mysterious spirit realm, there’s still a lot of potential in the world of ATLA.

It’s this kind of potential that could make a fourth season interesting. While the Gaang has been to all four of the kingdoms, there’s still so much more to be explored and examined in this fantastical world.

5 Doesn’t: Negatives Of World Building

World-building in any form of media is appreciated and even enjoyed, as it tends to expand upon a world, fleshing it out more for the audience and fans. That being said, like anything else, world-building isn’t always the best.

The sad truth is that worldbuilding done incorrectly can end up being either sloppy or too much for the world. In something like ATLA, this could go one way or the other. The world-building could improve the world but there’s a high risk of it making it more muddled.

4 Needs: Familiar Faces

Nobody likes saying goodbye to a fan-favorite character or watching them fade away. There are many characters in ATLA, from good to bad, that make up the world and improve upon the story, some being well known and crucial characters while others being well-loved side characters.

Any fans hope is that a fourth or extended season of any show would bring back said characters and allow fans to see characters like the lovable Uncle Iroh, Zuko’s insane sister Azula or even Cabbage Man one last time.

3 Doesn’t: Finished Arcs And Respect

Now, with many shows, there happen to be problems with having certain characters return. Sometimes it’s as simple as their arc is completed or finished. ATLA is no exception and has certain characters and rules that could or should never be revisited.

So many of the characters visited in ATLA already had their arcs completed and should be allowed to simply rest. Others, like Iroh, were so superbly and beautifully voiced by actors long since passed that they shouldn’t be seen again out of respect alone.

2 Needs: Older Gaang

The thing that makes the Gaang so interesting and unique is that their kids fighting a war against adults. It’s sometimes easy to forget that they are kids, fighting like grown-ups and it’s because of this that many fans long to see the Gaang grow up over the years.

A fourth season could be a blessing for so many fans, giving them a chance to watch the characters they remember as kids grow up into adults while at the same time remaining the same characters fans fell in love with.

1 Doesn’t: The Legend Of Korra

Following the end of ATLA back in 2008, many fans were left devastated and demanded a fourth and even fifth season. While the unfortunate truth is that fans may never see another season due to the horrendous film, another show has given fans the follow-up they deserved.

The Legend Of Korra, released in 2012, serves as a sequel to ATLA, following the next Avatar, Korra. Despite some mixed reactions and reviews, LOK does answer a few questions, provide world-building, and give fans another look at the world of ATLA.
