Black Widow Alternate Ending Is A Better Send-Off For Natasha Romanoff

Black Widow’s recently-emerged deleted scene reveals an alternate ending to the movie. Scarlett Johansson’s long-overdue solo film as Natasha Romanoff centers around her effort to attend to some unfinished business. Together with her Russian family, Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the Avenger finally ensures the end of General Dreykov (Ray Winstone) and the Red Room Program.

Set in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War and just before Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) broke out Team Cap from the Raft, Black Widow follows Natasha as she revisits her past as a former Red Room assassin as a way to completely wrap up Nat’s story in the MCU. Admittedly, it’s an unconventional standalone film, given the titular character’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Despite where it lands in the timeline, the blockbuster, directed by Cate Shortland, is still able to set up a few plotlines that will continue in the future. That includes establishing Yelena’s place in the universe as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) newest recruit for whatever team she is assembling as seen in the movie’s post-credits scene.

As for its actual ending, Black Widow wraps up with Nat going off to reunite with Steve as they plan on busting Team Cap out of jail. This effectively sets up her arc in Avengers: Infinity War where she becomes one of the Secret Avengers who operated underground for two years with the super-soldier and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). However, the film almost had a different ending, one that sees Nat come back to Ohio where she spent her more normal years with her first family. Given the events of Black Widow, this deleted scene would’ve been set after Nat left Europe to reunite with her fellow Avengers. It’s uncertain why it was cut, but it may have something to do with the movie’s runtime. The standalone flick already clocked in at 2 hours and 14 minutes, so they may have needed to leave some scenes out of the theatrical cut. That being said, this would’ve been a much better ending to the character. Obviously, the way Black Widow wrapped up was an effective way to set up Nat’s subsequent adventures. However, since it’s also Johansson’s final MCU film, it would’ve been more impactful seeing her go back to Ohio and have that brief encounter with that little girl.

Unfortunately, Johansson’s exit from the MCU has been recently tainted with controversy as the actress sued Disney over Black Widow’s hybrid release. Instead of exclusively premiering on theaters, it was also simultaneously dropped on Disney+ with its Premier Access feature. It’s still uncertain how the impending case will be resolved, but it seems like both camps are standing on their respective grounds.
