A user on Reddit posts their fan-casting for the beloved role of Cabbage Man in Netflix’s upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. Originally an animated Nickelodeon show co-created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the journey of Aang, the titular last airbender who is destined as the latest incarnation of the Avatar to save the world from a 100-year war. Despite ending in 2008, the series maintains a massive fandom, enjoying a resurgence when the show was added to Netflix in 2020.

Avatar fans recently received exciting news, with the casting announcements of Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh for Netflix’s live-action adaptation. Lee’s casting was well-received based on his similar performance as Mr. Kim on Kim’s Convenience. Also announced were Lim Kay Siu (Anna and the King) as Air Nomad Monk Gyatso and Ken Leung (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Fire Nation Commander Zhao. They join young castmates Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio Tarbell (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), and Dallas Liu (Zuko). One role yet to be cast, however, is the cabbage merchant, a repeated cameo character whose cabbage cart is repeatedly but inadvertently destroyed by Team Avatar during their adventures.

One Avatar fan believes they have the perfect solution: Redditor Gamblegork625 suggests the multi-hyphenate actor Ken Jeong should play the live-action Cabbage Man. Jeong is known for his comedic roles as Leslie Chow in The Hangover and Ben Chang in Community. Fellow fans seem into the idea, commenting things like “I can already here him scream MY CABBAGES!!!” and inserting the word “cabbage” into various quotes from Jeong’s other roles. Redditor cariface, however, suggests instead that Jeong play Ozai in the Ember Island Players, a nod to the in-universe fictional portrayal of Team Avatar’s adventures.

The series started filming in Vancouver on November 16, under the working title of Trade Winds, and the expectations are quite high given the fanbase’s general apprehension. Showrunner Albert Kim has previously stated his dedication to “authenticity,” and though the departure of the original creators has fans nervous, the new Avatar seems to largely be following the source material. Netflix has at least managed to pass the low bar of not white-washing the Asian and Native cast, as was done in M. Night Shyamalan’s previous film adaptation.

Avatar: The Last Airbender fans may be understandably skeptical about the idea of another attempt at telling the story in live-action, but taking the ostensibly miniscule role of the cabbage merchant seriously would be a good way for Netflix to curry their favor. Casting an actor like Jeong, who carries both name recognition and the ability to slay a comedy cameo, would likely be a welcome development, but whether he would be willing to perform such a small part is unclear. With filming for Avatar: The Last Airbender already underway, casting news for Cabbage Man and other characters, such as Avatar Roku, Suki, or even Appa and Momo, may be coming soon.
