Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Avatar: The Last Airbender boasts a plethora of wonderfully written characters, each with their own unique personalities. Throughout ATLA’s three seasons, the main characters each undergo vast personal development. While the characters’ personalities become ever more complex and distinct, they do maintain their core identities throughout, which is evidence of high-quality writing.

A show that features a cast of great characters is inevitably going to contain some brilliant quotes, and ATLA is no exception. At some point during the series, each ATLA character has delivered a line that encapsulates their personality, and these quotes are more often than not among the best in the series.

10 Mai

“Oh Well, I’m Sorry I Can’t Be As High-Strung And Crazy As The Rest Of You.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Mai is generally quite a reserved and gloomy person. The only time she displays any discernible emotion is either during a fight or when she is with Zuko. Mai’s dreary calmness is amplified by her entourage, which includes Zuko, Azula, and Ty Lee, all of whom tend to be, as Mai points out, “high-strung and crazy”.

Mai is not devoid of emotion, as evidenced in “The Beach”, where Mai expresses herself during the conversation with her friends, however, she rarely loses her cool like this and is generally calm and collected.

9 Ty Lee

“My Aura Has Never Been Pinker!”

Despite her kind and bubbly demeanor, Ty Lee is one of the strongest women in ATLA, which is why Azula enlists her to capture the Avatar. Ty Lee is reluctant to accept Azula’s call to arms, explaining that she has found her calling in the circus and that her “aura has never been pinker”.

However, one does not simply say no to Azula, and Ty Lee ultimately agrees to join the team, much to the detriment of her “aura.” One can only presume that a pink aura is a positive thing, and if a color could sum up Ty Lee’s personality, that color would certainly be pink.

8 Suki

“I am a warrior, but I’m a girl too.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Suki first appears in “The Warriors of Kyoshi” and quickly establishes herself as one of the most formidable warriors in the series. In fact, she and the other Kyoshi Warriors form one of the most formidable teams in ATLA and end up teaching Sokka a valuable lesson regarding his sexism.

After Sokka apologizes to Suki for treating her like a girl rather than a warrior, she rightly points out that somebody can be both. The quote aptly addresses a serious social issue while also perfectly summarizing her mature, intelligent, spirited character.

7 Azula

“Trust Is For Fools. Fear Is The Only Reliable Way.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Azula is one of the most callous, cruel, and fearsome villains of any television show and will stop at nothing to get what she desires. Azula’s own mother thought she was a monster, and her friends Ty Lee and Mai thought the same, which is why they ultimately betrayed her.

Azula’s quote about trust and fear is a real indictment of her deep-rooted trust issues, stemming from her distant relationship with her mother and amplified by the subsequent betrayals by her close friends and family.

6 Iroh

“Sometimes, The Best Way To Solve Your Own Problems Is To Help Someone Else.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Although Iroh is a man of wisdom, peace, and kindness, he is also one of the most powerful benders in the Avatar universe. Iroh is a strong believer in helping others, arguing that helping someone else can help solve one’s own problems, a way of thinking that perfectly sums up his kind and compassionate personality.

Iroh lives by this philosophy and is depicted as more than happy to help those in need on multiple occasions throughout ATLA. The perfect example of this philosophy in action is during the Liberation of Ba Sing Se, where Iroh lends his talents to the White Lotus and ultimately contributes to ending the Hundred Year War.

5 Toph

“You Just Stood Your Ground Against A Crazy Beast, And Even More Impressive, You Stood Your Ground Against Me.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Toph proves time and time again that she is the greatest earthbender alive, which is thanks to her toughness and tenacity, and she is constantly reminding the others of this fact. Toph is one of the strongest and funniest characters in ATLA, and her remark to Aang at the end of “Bitter Work” captures this perfectly.

After a difficult day of earthbending training, a downtrodden Aang has to defeat a vicious saber-tooth moose lion to save Sokka’s life. After doing so, Toph goads Aang, forcing him to stand up to her. This leads Toph to come out with her brilliant quote, where she ranks herself as more dangerous than “a crazy beast”, making for a hilarious (and accurate) interjection.

4 Zuko

“I Don’t Need Luck Though, I Don’t Want It. I’ve Always Had To Struggle And Fight, And That’s Made Me Strong.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Zuko undergoes vast character development throughout ATLA’s three seasons, and although he grows a lot as a person, his core personality remains the same. Zuko is a fighter, he is the most resilient and tenacious character in ATLA, and his monologue to Aang in “The Siege of the North, Part 2” perfectly sums up his personality.

Zuko’s struggles are well documented throughout ATLA, and although he switches allegiances and loyalties in the show, he never fully loses the sense of who he truly is. Zuko’s hard work is ultimately rewarded, and he finally becomes Fire Lord not through luck, but through strength.

3 Katara

“I Will Never, Ever, Turn My Back On People Who Need Me.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Katara is a vital member of Team Avatar and will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of those she cares for. She is the glue that holds the team together, and that is entirely down to her unrivaled compassion and emotional intelligence.

In “The Painted Lady,” Katara feels compelled to help a destitute fishing village and does so despite the detriment to Team Avatar’s mission schedule. When Sokka finds out, he tells her she should not have helped them. Katara passionately attests that she can never sit idly by while someone needs her help, and this is a perfect summary of her personality.

2 Sokka

“That’s All I Got. It’s Pretty Much My Whole Identity. Sokka, The Meat And Sarcasm Guy.”

Avatar The Last Airbender One Quote From Each Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality

Although Sokka is a far more complex character than his introspective revelation in “Bitter Work” would suggest, it does provide an appropriate summary of his personality. Sokka is always thinking about food, particularly meat, and his insatiable appetite does tend to get him into some difficult situations, which are often exacerbated by his sarcastic remarks.

His ruminations while stuck in the hole during “Bitter Work” are hilarious. Sokka’s comedic brilliance comes from the delivery of his lines, and the admission that his whole identity centers around meat and sarcasm is delivered in typical Sokka fashion.

1 Aang

“Will You Go Penguin Sledding With Me?”

As the protagonist of ATLA, it is no surprise that Aang delivers many great quotes and musings of wisdom throughout the series. Aang is wise beyond his years and has an unfaltering moral compass, and many quotes evidence this. However, no quote quite captures Aang’s personality and spirit like “will you go penguin sledding with me?” does.

With the weight of the world on his young shoulders, Aang’s playful and fun-loving personality always shines through. Nothing sums this up better than when Aang asks a total stranger to go penguin sledding with him, despite having just been thawed out of a hundred-year-old iceberg.
