Avatar The Shadow of Kyoshi Confirms Earthbenders Can Control Glass

Since the launch of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the world of elemental bending has inspired the imaginations of fans around the world, leaving them to debate about the complexities of the Avatar-verse, things such as other weird dual animal hybrids and how far can bending powers really go. It seems that thanks to the Avatar Kyoshi novelizations, specifically Avatar: The Shadow of Kyoshi, one of these burning debates has finally been answered; earthbenders can bend glass.

Avatar: The Shadow of Kyoshi is a sequel to Avatar: The Rise of Kyoshi, and is the second book in a series of novels that deep dive into the life of the warrior named Kyoshi. Briefly touched upon in the show, earthbender Kyoshi served the role of Avatar two cycles before Aang. Living until two hundred and thirty years old, Kyoshi’s long life provides a lot of time for wild and interesting adventures, giving the books a lot of awesome stuff to cover. However, Kyoshi is most well known, in our world and within the Avatar-verse, for creating Kyoshi Island and founding the Kyoshi Warriors. What truly sets Kyoshi apart from other Avatars like Roku, Aang, or Korra though is her perspective on what justice is, even going as far as killing her enemies, making her one of the most intense and brutal Avatars to ever exist.

The debate over how far benders abilities reach has been a hot topic of discussion since the shows very first episode, but since the day that Toph discovered metalbending and the episode where Katara learned bloodbending, fans have really been trying to break down exactly what the extent of these abilities are. Being that Toph is able to bend metal by controlling the bits of iron deep within it, fans have often wondered if the same would be true for glass since glass is essentially just superheated earth. Well thanks to a specific line within The Shadow of Kyoshi, it is now confirmed canon that it is possible, although it seems it must be a lost art form since no one is doing it hundreds of years later during Aang’s time as Avatar. The line from the novel reads, “The shards of glass in her skin plucked themselves out under the force of her earthbending and balled into a floating clump that dropped to the floor when she switched her focus to a nearby pitcher.”

Now one might argue that perhaps the reason we never see glassbending anywhere else in the Avatar series is simply that Kyoshi was so powerful that she was the only one able to do it. But, based on Toph’s ability to bend metal and then teach it to generations of earthbenders after her, it is far more likely that this is a skill any well-trained earthbender can learn, but was simply lost to time and never passed on through teachings. Another simple explanation could be that glass just isn’t around that much in what is shown of the Avatar-verse, however that theory falls apart more and more once you get towards the time of Korra where glass is seen time and time again. And while this scene in the book may answer the question of if earthbenders can bend glass, it also raises a ton more questions. Clearly glass can be manipulated, but can it also be created? Waterbenders have the ability to freeze and unfreeze their water at will, giving them the ability to control ice, so is it possible that an earthbender could create so much pressure and friction with sand that it would warm enough to turn into glass on the spot? If that was the case it would stand to reason that that is how all glass in the Avatar-verse is made, much like how the electricity seen in Korra is harvested from firebenders bending lightning, and since we never really hear about or see any glassbending it’s pretty likely this isn’t the case, although, much like mentioned earlier, it could simply be that glassbending was a one-time discovery by Kyoshi lost to time.

While one debate may be solved, a million more will now rage on. Despite learning that earthbenders can bend glass, this knowledge from Avatar: The Shadow of Kyoshi is bound to start more debates than it solves.
