Avengers Endgames Hulk Arc Can Explain Why SheHulk Exists

Avengers: Endgame saw Bruce Banner and the Hulk merging, making way for Smart Hulk, and it’s this part of Bruce’s arc that can explain why She-Hulk exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Hulk hasn’t had the best luck on the big screen, beginning with Ang Lee’s Hulk in 2003, starring Eric Bana as Bruce Banner. As it received mixed reviews, the Hulk was given another chance in the 2008 movie The Incredible Hulk, directed by Louis Leterrier and now starring Edward Norton. The Incredible Hulk was the introduction of the character in the MCU, but he went through another recast when it was time for him to join the Avengers.

Mark Ruffalo took over the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk in the character’s second appearance in the MCU in The Avengers and continued to play the character in six more movies: Iron Man 3 (in its post-credits scene), Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel (in a mid-credits scene), and Avengers: Endgame. Sadly, Bruce and the Hulk didn’t have a big presence in the MCU, and their roles were reduced to the other genius in the team and the one member with the worst temper but incredible strength that came in handy from time to time. However, Bruce and the Hulk went through a major transformation in Avengers: Endgame, finally becoming one by combining the best things about each one.

After a five year time-jump following the snap, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlet Johansson) meet with Bruce to explain their plan to undo Thanos’ snap, and it’s during that meeting that Scott and viewers learn that Bruce and the Hulk are now one. Smart Hulk (or Professor Hulk) simply says that he “put the brains and the brawn together”, combining the “best of both worlds”, but no more about his transformation is revealed. However, it’s clear that after years of struggling with accepting the Hulk, Bruce finally found the balance he needed and realized that living with the Hulk doesn’t have to be an endless torment, and this makes She-Hulk’s presence in the MCU a lot smoother and believable.

Among the many TV projects Marvel has prepared for the near future is She-Hulk, focused on Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany). In the comics, Jennifer Walters is Bruce Banner’s cousin, and she acquires a milder version of his Hulk condition after receiving a blood transfusion from Bruce. Given the struggles he went through during most of his arc in the MCU, there’s no way Bruce would have risked “infecting” someone else with his mutation (whether through blood transfusion or something else), especially someone from his family – however, now that he found a balance and an answer to how to live with the Hulk condition, it’s less of an issue to him if his cousin has the same condition as he knows there are ways to balance both sides, so she doesn’t have to live a tormented life.

Smart Hulk wasn’t given a proper arc in Avengers: Endgame, but the little story he had helps make way for the arrival of She-Hulk, and fans will get to see Mark Ruffalo as Bruce/Hulk one more time as he’s set to appear in the series, so he will surely play a role in her acquiring this condition and learning how to deal with it.
