Bad Trip Star Eric André Had A Knife Pulled On Him While Filming The Movie

Bad Trip stars Eric André and Lil Rel Howery had a knife pulled on them by a disgruntled business owner during one of the film’s odd pranks. André is a master of hidden camera comedy in the same vein as Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat, though his work leans away from political satire and toward abject surrealism. The comedian is best known for his parody of public access talk shows, The Eric Andre Show, which debuted on Adult Swim in 2012. At home in the subversive haven that is Adult Swim, André gained attention for his public pranks and truly bizarre interviews with unwitting celebrity guests who run the gambit from playing along to running screaming from the set.

With Bad Trip, André and longtime director of the show Kitao Sakurai have brought his uniquely chaotic comedy to the big screen. In the film, Chris Carey (André) and his best friend, Bud Malone (Howery) travel from Florida to New York so Chris can confess his feelings for his high school crush Mia Li (Michaela Conlin), all while Bud’s recently-released-from-prison sister Trina (Tiffany Haddish) pursues them for using her car. Along the way, the irreverent duo pull a number of André’s infamous pranks.

Per the LA Times, André and Howery ran into trouble during the production when a business owner whipped out a knife. The pair were pulling a crude act, pretending that their penises were stuck in a Chinese finger trap. Evidently, the business owner was not amused. Howery recalls storming off the set in costume, saying “I’m done. I’m not doing this movie” and returning to his hotel. He eventually came back because his kids convinced him to. Howery recalls that when he described his ordeal to them they “thought it was hilarious.” Howery described the altercation in his and André’s interview with Screen Rant.

It was the first day, and we went to the wrong barber shop. Our security wasn’t there, the cameras weren’t even in there. And I don’t know what this brother may have been talking about when we got there. I feel like he was like, “Let somebody walk in here…” Because he was so enraged.

And we were very nice. We were saying, “Excuse me, can I get some help?” Well, he just lost it. It looked like he was looking for a gun and couldn’t find it; found a knife, chased us out the barbershop, we fall off the tracks. I’m under a car, my knee and elbow are scraped; the security guy jumped in front of him.

But the crazy part is this dude was enraged, and then they’re like, “It was a movie,” and he was like, “Oh, that is crazy. Where do I sign?” You’re about to go to jail, bro.

Anyone familiar with André’s work and even those not can imagine that this isn’t the first time the actor has run into trouble. While performing a stunt with John Cena, André suffered a concussion. Being arrested and attacked is par for the course when you walk around New York City half-naked and campaigning to legalize ranch dressing. It can be dangerous work entertaining people in exactly the way André does. One cannot fault Howery for having second thoughts.

The Eric Andre Show season 5 debuted in October 2020, four years after season 4. Fans had to wait a long time for more of André’s signature comedy as he branched out into other roles, including voice work for The Lion King remake and Matt Groening’s Disenchanted on Netflix. It’s clear that he was hard at work on Bad Trip, and though hopefully the wait quite for more of the show won’t be so long, the success of the film and the notoriety of its production may just introduce a wider audience to André’s signature style.
