Batgirl Cassandra Cain Returning To DC Comics

When Cassandra Cain appeared as Batgirl in the 1990s, she couldn’t have been any more different than her predecessor Barbara Gordon. The child of two infamous assassins, Cassandra’s superior fighting style, signature costume, and unique backstory won over fans as Cassandra’s role in the Bat-Family went through stages throughout the years, even after she was no longer Batgirl. For the better part of this decade, she has operated under the costumed identity as Orphan but did an upcoming Detective Comics panel suggest that Cassandra is primed to don the iconic cape and cowl once again?

Appearing in Batman #567 during Batman’s “No-Man’s Land” storyline, Cassandra Cain was the child of worldwide assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. Her father trained her to surpass him and her mother by depriving her of speech and human contact, helping her to become an elite martial artist with the ability to interpret and anticipate an opponent’s body language while remaining mute and illiterate. However, Cassandra didn’t have the stomach for murder like her father and abandoned him, living on her own for a number of years until she re-appeared in Gotham. Impressed with her abilities and heroism, Batman allowed her to become Batgirl and eventually work alongside former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, now operating as Oracle. Cassandra eventually had to confront her past regarding her father and even gained the ability to talk and read although it hindered her martial arts abilities for a time. She eventually abandoned her role as Batgirl although she would continue to cross paths with members of the Bat-Family, even adopting the identity of the Black Bat for a while.

When The New 52 reboot took place in 2011, Cassandra’s origins were modified slightly. With Barbara Gordon’s status as Batgirl reinstated, Cassandra and her father David would make their debut Batman and Robin Eternal. Created to be a gift for the leader of a clandestine organization known as “Mother”, Cassandra was rejected but later used to murder Miranda Row, mother of Cassandra’s friend and Batman sidekick Bluebird. After her father died ensuring Mother’s death, Cassandra adopted his identity as Orphan and since then, she has worked alongside Batman and other Gotham vigilantes in Detective Comics and in one of the latest incarnations of the Outsiders. Her popularity also continued to rise with her appearance in Young Justice: Outsiders and in the 2020 Birds of Prey film, where she was portrayed by actress Ella Jay Basco.

Recently, Detective Comics artist Bilquis Evely posted an unfinished panel on her Twitter, as seen above, of a cowl and cape-wearing figure whose appearance looks similar to previous portrayals of Cassandra’s Batgirl. The over-sized utility belt, lanky yet strong posture, and full facemask with the almost goggle-like eyes seem on par more for Cassandra’s Batgirl costume as compared to Barbara Gordon or Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl. Considering the rumors that Barbara Gordon’s time as Batgirl may conclude following the end of her current series, this may be the perfect segue for Cassandra Cain to return as Batgirl, a role that she has successfully returned to in the DCeased series. Gotham will always need a Batgirl and hopefully, this fan-favorite character will get her second chance in the moonlight.
