Catwoman is one of the oldest supporting characters in Batman’s orbit. Since her debut as “The Cat” in Batman #1 (by Bill Finger and Bob Kane), Gotham City has never been complete without Selina Kyle.

Like her beau-foe, Catwoman lends herself well to reinvention. From cat burglar to super-villain to anti-heroine and back around again, she’s been both a thorn in the Dark Knight’s side and someone closer to his heart. The most recent Catwoman already earned her place on this list. Catwoman: Hunted is an anime-flavored film and one that takes many cues from Cowboy Bebop. After all, Selina and Spike Spiegel have lots in common – from a criminal past they can’t outrun to their cold calm in the face of danger. In this feature, Selina’s latest theft puts her on the hit list of the crime syndicate Leviathan, leaving her with no choice to but work alongside Batwoman and Interpol. Gillies’ Catwoman loves her feline puns and is easily the sexiest animated Catwoman; just listen to her purring whispers as she teases Batwoman.

9 Anne Hathaway In The Dark Knight Rises

After the 2004 Catwoman film mangled the character beyond recognition, Selina needed a big screen redemption. She achieved it at the hands of Anne Hathaway in the final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Hathaway’s Catwoman is a bit of a tease – especially towards the rich fools she cons or robs – but more heroic than past onscreen versions. She ultimately emerges as an ally to Batman and the two run off together. However, romance has never been one of Nolan’s strongest suits. Hathaway and Christian Bale don’t lack chemistry, per se, but are they soulmates? Sadly, the film doesn’t quite sell it.

8 Adrienne Barbeau In The DC Animated Universe

When asked about the best version of the Caped Crusader and his world, Bat-fans usually cite Batman: The Animated Series. That series’ interpretation of Catwoman falls a bit short of “definitive,” if only due to underuse, but it’s still a rock-solid portrayal. BTAS Catwoman is one of the more anti-heroic portrayals; her attempt at going straight doesn’t stick, but she’s never purely bad. Even in her villainous outings like “The Cat and The Claw” or “Catwalk,” she ultimately winds up working with Batman against a greater threat. Adrienne Barbeau’s silky purr of a performance made her memorable as both Selina Kyle and Catwoman.

7 Sanaa Lathan On Harley Quinn

As a borderline parody series, Harley Quinn presents a different take on Catwoman. This Selina is the queen bee of the Gotham underworld, not to mention a straight woman next to Harley’s rambunctious insanity and Poison Ivy’s neuroses. At the same time, she’s also rather aloof, lacking the conscience of her comic counterpart. In one word, this Catwoman is smooth – something Sanaa Lathan’s performance totally complements. With Harley Quinn’s third season in the pipeline, viewers can only hope they’ll see more of Catwoman strolling their way.

6 Laura Bailey In Batman: The Telltale Series

One of Laura Bailey’s most famous voice roles is the Homunculus Lust in the English dub of Fullmetal Alchemist. She reused that deep, sultry voice to play Catwoman in Telltale Games’ Batman series. Batman first meets Catwoman while she’s on a robbery, and soon after, Bruce recognizes Selina while she’s on a date with Harvey Dent (funnily enough, played by Bailey’s husband and former FMA co-star Travis Willingham). From there, it’s all in the player’s hands as to what direction Bruce and Selina’s relationship goes.

5 Tie: Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt In Batman (1966)

The 1966 Batman series’ version of Catwoman was more of a diabolic mastermind than an anti-heroic thief like her modern incarnations. Three actresses played Catwoman across the show: Julie Newmar in Seasons 1-2, Lee Meriwether in the spin-off film, and Eartha Kitt in Season 3. In what might be cheating, the former and latter will be listed together in a draw. Choosing one of these ladies over another is just too impossible a choice, especially since they’re both so unique in the role.

Newmar’s Catwoman was funnier, not to mention as steamy as 1960s TV would allow; it’s just a shame she didn’t reprise the role on the big screen. Kitt was less a comedienne or a seductress and more a straight-up super-villainess. Playing the role with relish, she had the best cackle of the Catwomen and either hissed or purred all her lines.

4 Zoë Kravitz In The Batman And The Lego Batman Movie

Zoë Kravitz has played Catwoman twice, in two very different movies. She first starred by voicing the character in The Lego Batman Movie, the most lighthearted Batman movie since 1966. This past year, she got a chance to play a live-action Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Even if it’s newer, it’s this latter performance that most Bat-fans will probably associate Kravitz with. The film takes inspiration from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s portrayal of Selina, both in their classic The Long Halloween and Catwoman-centered spin-off, When In Rome. For one, this Selina is the illegitimate daughter of Carmine Falcone and more of a hero from the start; she’s practically Batman’s partner throughout the film. Kravitz’s chemistry with Pattinson is clear, but Kravitz plays up Selina’s human side too. In her own way, she wants justice as much as Bruce does.

3 Gina Gershon In The Batman (2004)

The Batman struggled with lackluster portrayals of some classic villains, but Catwoman wasn’t one of them; the only problem is how the series didn’t use her more often. This Selina was more villainous than the DCAU incarnation; she only ever grudgingly worked with Batman and never had a proper heel-face-turn. Gina Gershon nailed this more rebellious side of the character, while also making Catwoman plenty witty and sensual. Even if her commitment to being bad made it hard to root for her, Gershon’s performance meant Selina could never be outright unlikeable.

2 Grey DeLisle In The Batman: Arkham Games

Do you need a voice for a villainess? Call Grey DeLisle. As one of the most prolific voice actresses working, DeLisle has played plenty of comic book characters, and her portrayal of Catwoman reigns supreme. Arkham City has side missions where the player plays as Catwoman, giving DeLisle plenty of opportunities to nail Selina’s wit, confidence, and teasing – and nail it she does. She returned for the sequel Arkham Knight, boasting the same strengths as before, and got to show off her singing talent with a rendition of “Can You Tame Wild Wimmen?” in Gotham By Gaslight.

1 Michelle Pfeiffer In Batman Returns

“Life’s a b*tch and so am I!” Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman is proof you don’t need comic accuracy for a great character. Selina begins Batman Returns as a nervous, repressed secretary, but a brush with death sees her reborn. Becoming Catwoman, Selina achieves self-actualization, grabbing a world that previously shunned her by the horns with all of her nine lives. This time around, her connection with Batman is because they can both only be their true selves while in costume; notice how Bruce and Selina aren’t wearing masks while at a costume ball.

Michael Keaton will be returning as Batman in The Flash. It’s tempting to say WB should bring back Pfeiffer too, but the DCEU would doubtlessly neuter what made her Catwoman so special.
