Concept art from WB Games Montréal’s canceled Batman: Arkham Knight sequel depicts an older Bruce Wayne and Damian Wayne donning a Batman Beyond-style Batsuit. After completing work on Arkham Knight’s “A Matter of Family” DLC, Arkham Origins developer WB Games Montréal eventually began work on a Damian Wayne-starring Batman game. The title never saw the light of day, though, and never received a formal announcement from publisher WB Games. Thus, knowledge of its existence comes courtesy of leaked details and concept art.

Reportedly, the Damian Wayne title took precedent, which forced the team to shelve work on its long-rumored Suicide Squad project. Leaked information claimed the Damian game would’ve soft rebooted the Arkham narrative while simultaneously serving as a sequel to Arkham Knight – not unlike God of War 2018’s relationship to God of War 3. Plans for a trilogy allegedly hinged on future successes, with Damian taking center stage over a proposed Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond) trilogy due to the supposed ease of selling Bruce’s son as the new Dark Knight. Still, the overarching narrative would’ve played out like the McGinnis-focused Batman tales, wherein Alfred is deceased and Bruce assumes the role of an older mentor who rarely leaves the Batcave. This particular adventure never saw the light of day, of course.

Newly shared concept art for the Montréal studio’s canceled Batman: Arkham Knight sequel gives more credence to leaks from 2016 that mentioned the Batman Beyond inspiration. Twitter user The Arkham Channel posted the art by Concept Artist Goran Bukvic, which depicts Damian Wayne’s Caped Crusader in a Batman Beyond-style suit. Akin to McGinnis’ iconic Batsuit, the Damian fit features a small red Bat-Symbol emblazoned across the chest. Other art pieces in the post show a much older and bearded Bruce Wayne dressed in a Batsuit that looks to have taken inspiration from the Arkham games and the cowl of Christian Bale’s Bat. A couple of redesigned Batcycle photos appear, as well. And, apparently, the canceled game once bore the codename of Project Sabbath.

“Project Sabbath”, a canceled Damian Wayne Batman game at WB Games Montreal, apparently has another wave of concept art revealed – this time by concept artist Goran Bukvic. Again, the above concept images seem to confirm five-year-old leaks, which hinted at a Batman Beyond-style story starring Damian Wayne and an older Bruce. Why exactly the Batman: Arkham Knight sequel fell apart remains a mystery, one that may not receive concrete answers anytime soon.

At the very least, the Arkham narrative lives on in Rocksteady Games’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, though Batman’s place, or lack thereof, in the plot remains unknown. And while WB Games Montréal’s Gotham Knights isn’t set in the Arkhamverse, it’ll still explore the legacy of Batman in a meaningful way.
