Batman Confirms Fans Are Wrong About His Most Dangerous Villain

Warning: contains spoilers for Batman Annual 2021!

Firefly may not be a top-tier member of Batman’s rogues’ gallery, but the Dark Knight cautions his new ally Ghost-Maker not to underestimate him, confirming Firefly is actually a dangerous villain. In Batman Annual 2021, on sale now in print and digital, Firefly is setting Gotham ablaze, leading Batman to make a stunning revelation about the villain to Ghost-Maker.

Firefly first appeared in 1952’s Detective Comics #184, created by writer France Herron and artist Dick Sprang. A former special effects expert, Firefly is also a dangerous pyromaniac, utilizing a high-tech suit equipped with flame-creating agents that also allows him to fly. This combination should make Firefly a major player in Gotham City, but for some reason, he has never been afforded the respect he deserves, not even after his backstory was considerably darkened in the 1980s. Firefly has also appeared in various animated and live-action adaptations but still remains off most fans’ radars. This is set to change, as he will make his DCEU debut in next year’s Batgirl film, played by Brendan Fraser, but ahead of his movie debut, DC is reminding fans that Firefly is much more dangerous than he is given credit for. Batman Annual 2021 is written by James Tynion IV and Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, with art by Ortiz, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr, and letters by Clayton Cowles.

Batman and Ghost-Maker are patrolling Gotham as Firefly is terrorizing the city, setting buildings ablaze and stretching the fire department beyond capacity—a fact Ghost-Maker notices. Ghost-Maker cracks a smart-aleck comment about it, asking if the fire department expected Batman to handle their job. As they head into battle, ready to bring Firefly to justice, Batman tells Ghost-Maker not to underestimate the villain; Ghost-Maker, being new to Gotham, has never encountered Firefly before tonight. Ghost-Maker is still not convinced, but goes along with it, only asking that Batman not rank Firefly near the top of his rogues’ gallery.

Even though Batman and Ghost-Maker were successful in defeating Firefly, the encounter still shows just how dangerous, and underrated, a villain he is. Firefly gives the Dark Knight pause. Batman has dealt with the absolute worst criminals in Gotham (and the entire DC Universe) and still cautions his allies to treat Firefly with care. Firefly is a pyromaniac with violent tendencies and the tools he needs to make his twisted vision a reality—a dangerous combination. Yet, for some reason, many heroes—including Ghost-Maker— still fail to see the dangerous potential lurking in Firefly.

When Brendan Fraser brings Firefly to life in Batgirl, perhaps the villain will be finally be recognized as the serious threat he is. Batman rightfully fears Firefly, seeing a murderous sociopath with the means to unleash much destruction and Ghost-Maker needs to follow suit.
