Batman Exposes The Nightmare of Fortnite Island

Warning: spoilers ahead for Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #2!

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ new Batman and Fortnite crossover series, the Dark Knight discovers the nightmarish truth about Fortnite Island. Having been pushed through a portal thanks to some unknown foe, Batman has found himself in the world of Fortnite, though he’s just as confused by his predicament as readers. Having no memory about who he is or his own past, Batman has been trapped in a loop of endless battles, slowly gathering as much information as he can before he’s eventually claimed by the imminent storm all Fortnite gamers have come to fear.

In the first issue of Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point from writer Christos Gage and artist Reilly Brown, Batman and Catwoman managed to find one another, as Selina Kyle was somehow sent to fight on the island as well. Despite not remembering one another, they still felt a shared emotional bond, leading to them working together for survival, taking down all the foes who sought to kill them. These assailants featured characters such as Midas, Cuddle Team Leader, Raven, and more fighters from the massively popular online game.

While Batman and Catwoman managed to be the last two alive in the storm, it looks as though they hadn’t been playing rounds of Duos. Batman found himself reset at the beginning of a new battle in Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #2, though it looks as though he’s been fighting for a long time since that first victory with Catwoman. Apparently, the Dark Knight has only had 22-minute intervals to gather intel (the amount of time it takes before the storm covers the whole island) before he forgets it all when he wakes up to a new battle. However, Batman is still resourceful, having written messages on his armor to remind himself of what he’s learned from past rounds.

Using this improvised and desperate form of memory retention, it’s revealed that Batman has been able to build an improvised Batcave on the island bit by bit, while also making sure he’s reminded to find Selina every round. Over time, Batman is able to track the movements of the storm as well, testing different theories in a bid to try and find a weakness in order to escape the loop. All in all, Batman’s current predicament is a dark one, and it stands to reason that this memory reboot and the subsequent cycle happens to every combatant on the island.

Eventually, Batman realizes that only one person has a chance of surviving the storm, and, as such, he instructs Selina to kill him at the end of a battle so that she might escape. After she does so, Batman wakes up once more and the implication is that Selina made it out, but it also looks as though the Dark Knight may have lost all the messages and records he had kept. This is possibly a result of being killed by another fighter as opposed to the storm, which is how he had been dying at the end of each round. Either way, it looks as though Batman still has a ways to go before he himself can escape the endless nightmare loop of battles that Fortnite has been revealed to be in this new series from DC Comics.
