Batman Faces The Court of Owls in Batman The Adventures Continue

The seminal world of Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) is returning to the comics as Batman finds himself tracking The Court of Owls in the newly announced season of Batman: The Adventures Continue. Alan Burnett and Paul Dini, creators of the ’90s animated series, are back with the second installment of their comic book series.

The second season follows on from the events of the first, whilst promising to delve into areas that they’ve yet to go. Gotham City is changing as Batman gets wind of an ancient order that is resurfacing after having been long buried. The Court of Owls, created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, first appeared in Batman (vol.2) #2 in 2011. They were introduced as Batman’s primary antagonists for the first two major story arcs of the New 52. BTAS came out over two decades before their introduction and given their recent popularity, it makes sense that they’re now being brought into the world of BTAS.

The Court of Owls is back in Gotham, but for what reason Batman doesn’t know, the World’s Greatest Detective will be gathering up the clues that will inevitably lead him to the organization itself. DC Comics, along with their announcement of season two, has released the cover art and two preview pages of Batman: The Adventures Continue Season II #1. The previews give readers a first look at Batman teaming up with Deadman, but also tease an attack from a Talon, they are The Court of Owls’ assassins. Check out the cover and preview pages below:

Riley Rossmo’s cover art features Gotham City morphed into the shape of an owl, signifying the control that they have over the city. Whether Batman knows it or not, The Court of Owls has always been there, silently operating from the shadows. Batman and Deadman take center stage nearer to the bottom of the cover. On his journey to figure out what The Court of Owls wants, Batman will not only rely on his detective skills but also on the help of an old ally, Deadman – who was voiced in the Animated Universe in Justice League: Unlimited by Batman himself Kevin Conroy.

The preview pages showcase Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and co., investigating a set of mysterious claw marks. These marks are the work of the Talon who is also featured, they are seen jumping over Gotham’s skyline. It all starts when Mayor Hill is killed by a mysterious assailant, sparking off Batman’s investigation. The questions of why did they kill the mayor and who did it remain in the forefront of Batman’s mind as he learns more and more about Gotham’s ancient underground society. Also, Veronic Vreeland returns as Batman, and Deadman pays her a visit at her mansion. Could she have something to hide? It seems so, as Batman finds a Talon gauntlet in her home. Having appeared in a substantial amount of BTAS episodes, fans will be excited to see the character’s return.

It’s amazing to see the world of Batman: The Animated Series continue, bringing in familiar faces and exploring some new ones. It’s an exciting time to be a fan of BTAS as along with Deadman, DC has teased that other heroes will return or appear for the first time. Batman and The Court of Owls are destined to cross paths sooner rather than later, as the ancient threat takes notice of his snooping. Batman: The Adventures Continue Season II hits comic book shops on June 1, with digital chapters publishing biweekly from May 6.
