Batman Finally Admits His Movie Mentor Helped Create Him in Comics Too

Warning: contains spoilers for Batman: The Detective #6!

While the Henri Ducard of Batman Begins turned out to just be Ra’s al Ghul in disguise, he is very much real in the comics, and Batman has finally admitted Ducard had a hand in shaping him. In Batman: The Detective #6, on sale now in print and digital, Batman, Ducard, and their allies are closing in on the villain Equilibrium, who is murdering people Batman has saved over the years. Before they head into battle, Batman admits the influence Ducard has had on his life and career.

For many years, Bruce Wayne traveled the globe, seeking out the best detectives and fighters to train under; Henri Ducard was one such person. First appearing in 1989’s Detective Comics #599, Ducard is a master detective and assassin working out of Paris. Knowing of his skills as a tracker, Bruce Wayne sought Ducard out, and the assassin ended up taking Bruce under his wing, teaching him all he knew. However, Henri Ducard was amoral and would not hesitate to kill, putting him at odds with Bruce, and the two parted company. Ducard would come to Gotham on a job many years later, and while there, deduced that Bruce Wayne and Batman were one and the same, though he would keep the knowledge to himself. The two would encounter each other sporadically through the years, and when Batman heads to Europe to track down a mysterious villain calling themselves Equilibrium, he encounters Ducard once again. The issue is written by Tom Taylor, with art by Andy Kubert, inks by Sandra Hope, colors by Brad Anderson and letters by Clem Robins.

Ducard has tracked Equilibrium to a ferry crossing the Thames; Batman, Knight, and Squire are on the way. As the three talk to Ducard, he apologizes for his role in creating Equilibrium. Batman tells Ducard this is not on him and that while he did not make Equilibrium, Henri Ducard did have a hand in creating Batman. Batman goes on to say that every time he has tracked a killer or found a missing child, he has drawn on the skills Ducard taught him. Ducard is genuinely touched and tells Batman he was a “good student,” before heading off into combat. Ducard ends up surviving the encounter, and Equilibrium is brought to justice.

Even though Henri Ducard helped shape Batman into the crime-fighter he is today, the two have not shared the best relationship. Ducard is, at his core, an assassin, killing people and calling it “business.” Ducard also uses guns in his line of work. None of these would get Batman’s seal of approval, and yet this murderer has been a huge influence on him. The differences in outlooks may have kept Batman from admitting to Ducard’s role in his life, but the fact remains Ducard was a big part of Batman’s life, and many years later, he owns up to it. The children Batman has reunited with their families may not know the name Henri Ducard, but they owe this amoral man a debt.

Batman’s apprenticeship took him all over the world, seeking out the best to prepare him for his war on crime. Henri Ducard had a major role in this, but Batman Begins glosses over it, making Ducard a disguise instead. While the Dark Knight and Ducard do not see eye to eye, Ducard still casts a large shadow over Batman’s life.
