Batman Got A Piggyback Ride From SpiderMan

Batman and Spider-Man are perhaps the most famous animal-inspired superheroes in the entire world, but the intense rivalry between Marvel and DC comics keeps these two critter lovers apart, well, at least recently. Believe it or not, there was once a time when Marvel and DC were far more friendly, and Batman actually took a ride on Spider-Man’s back!

Despite a heavy competitive nature between the two brands, the comic publishing behemoths of DC and Marvel actually once used to work together from time to time, especially in the mid 90’s. In fact, the mid 90’s actually brought about an entire crossover mini-series between the two companies with the simple title of DC vs. Marvel. The series ran in 1996 and used ballots sent out to readers to determine the outcomes of which heroes would beat which, bringing audience participation to an extreme level. Some of the epic battles included fights between Silver Surfer and the Green Lantern, Superman vs. the Hulk, and Batman taking on Captain America. This mini crossover event was written by Peter David and Ron Marz, with art by Claudio Castellini and Dan Jurgens. As sweet as this run was, this isn’t where the hilarious moment of Batman riding Spider-Man occurs.

First published in 1998, Batman & Spider-Man: New Age Dawning was DC’s sequel to Marvel’s previously published crossover Spider-Man and Batman: Disordered Minds from 1995, in which the pair had to take on the devious likes of Carnage and the Joker. When Ra’s al Ghul manipulates the Kingpin to help destroy the world, their respective adversaries, Batman and Spider-Man, team up to stop the dastardly duo. It is during this match up that Spider-Man has to quite literally carry the team, hoisting Batman up the side of a snowy mountainside as he rides Spidey’s back like a small child straddling their parent for a better view of a firework show.

The issue is pure 90’s nostalgia, publishing in a decade where both Spider-Man and Batman were absolute stars due to the success of both of their animated series. It was written by J. M. DeMatteis with penciller Graham Nolan, inker Karl Kesel, letterer John Costanza, and colorist Gloria Vasquez. With Batman always being so brooding, it is absolutely hilarious to see him ride the back of a goofball hero half his age.

Seeing fan favorite heroes team up is always awesome, but seeing brands work together like this is perhaps even cooler. Here’s hoping that fans may see some more Batman and Spider-Man team ups in the future, although chances are sadly pretty slim.
