Batman Just Became DCs Version of The Witcher

Warning! Spoilers for Dark Knights of Steel #1 by DC Comics

Dark Knights of Steel has reimagined the DC Universe in a world of swords and sorcery, where Batman has effectively become a witcher from the popular Netflix show, The Witcher. In the new limited series, Batman is tasked with protecting Superman and his family from the one thing that can harm them: magic. The Dark Knight takes his job very seriously.

The Witcher began as a Polish fantasy series from Andrzej Sapkowski, which followed the adventures of monster hunter Gerald of Rivia. The books were adapted into a critically acclaimed video game series by CD Projekt Red, starring the book’s protagonist. CD Projekt Red released three games based on The Witcher, with the third installment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, winning numerous Game of the Year awards. Following the success of the games, Netflix adapted Sapkowski’s novels into a live-action fantasy series of the same name starring Henry Cavill, which is about to begin its second season.

In Dark Knights of Steel #1 by Taylor, Yasmine Putri, and Wes Abbott, readers are introduced to a medieval DC Universe, where Superman’s family is still alive and has formed the House of El after crash-landing Earth from Krypton. Bruce Wayne has essentially become a witcher for his house, as he’s sworn to protect Kal-El and his family from magical threats across the realm. In the first issue, he ends up tracking down Black Canary – whose powers are considered magic in this new DC Universe.

We spoke with Tom Taylor about Batman’s role and relationship with Superman in the Dark Knights of Steel. He said that the pair of hero’s are “close” but that Batman’s job is to protect him at all costs. Taylor said that Bruce Wayne “is a witcher; his job is to root out magic in this world, because magic is the one thing that can harm Superman, and he takes that job very seriously.” Readers see just how committed Batman is in stopping magical threats, as he nearly has his eardrums shattered by Black Canary’s sonic scream. But for Bruce Wayne, he’s stopping another potential threat to his house, so the pain is worth it.

The comic ends with the death of Jor-El, who’s killed with a magical arrow after revealing the truth behind Batman’s parentage. Now, DC’s witcher will have to solve the case of his father’s death while likely facing off against even more dangerous threats in the Dark Knights of Steel universe. For those wanting to see DC’s version of The Witcher, things are only about to get crazier from here on out in the series.
