Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman: The Imposter #2
In DC’s newest Black Label series, Batman: The Imposter shows the harsh reality Alfred Pennyworth faced trying to raise a young Bruce Wayne. While the bulk of the series sees Batman in the early stages of his career and dealing with a murderous vigilante who’s been posing as him, there are also some interesting looks into the past that explore Bruce’s troubled childhood after the deaths of his parents.
The first issue of Batman: The Imposter, from writer Mattson Tomlin and artist Andrea Sorrentino, explores the Dark Knight’s relationship with Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Bruce Wayne’s childhood psychiatrist and one of Batman’s greatest allies. Having come to her bleeding and near death one night, Leslie patched him up and kept him alive while also deciding to keep Batman’s true identity a secret. However, she insisted on the condition that Bruce had to meet with her each morning after he goes out on patrol. With that, Bruce Wayne became Dr. Thompkins’ patient once more, just as he had been before he left to learn the skills he’d need to become the Batman.
The Imposter #2 reveals the concerns and struggles Alfred had trying to raise Bruce Wayne as a child. According to the Wayne Manor butlerr, the entire staff was terrified of Bruce and his rage, and Alfred was the only one willing to go near him. Receiving a laundry list of problematic diagnoses from Thompkins, it’s clear that Bruce’s trauma from his parents’ deaths initially began as a rage he couldn’t control, leaving Alfred at a complete loss in regards to how he could best help Bruce. Take a look at some preview pages and the official synopsis for the latest issue:
- BATMAN: THE IMPOSTER #2
- Mattson Tomlin (W)
- Andrea Sorrentino (A)
- Detective Blair Wong set her sights on Bruce Wayne as a source of information about the Batman-but neither of them was ready for the sparks that flew when they met. Unfortunately for their relationship, the imposter Batman has killed again, and the pressure is mounting to close the case…immediately!
Clearly, Leslie is still concerned by Bruce Wayne’s rage and how he’s channeling it into his new crusade as the Batman. But beyond that, the desperation evident within Alfred in his attempts to raise Bruce is a massively poignant way to show just how broken and lost the young Wayne had become. Has he really found a way to control his anger now that he’s returned to Gotham as a man, or did he just find the means to unleash his rage in more dangerous ways? It seems as though that’s exactly what Leslie is trying to determine.
Combined with the presence of this imposter Batman is trying to track down, it looks like Dr. Thompkins will be forcing Bruce to engage in quite a bit of self-reflection as both Bruce Wayne and the Batman. As this new series continues, it’s going to be interesting to see how Bruce Wayne grows and evolves from the angry boy who scared his butler to the vigilante hero seeking justice that Gotham would come to know as Batman.
