Batmans Most Heroic Sacrifice Revealed In Wonder Woman Dead Earth

WARNING! SPOILER FOR WONDER WOMAN: DEAD EARTH #4!

In Daniel Warren Johnson’s Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, Wonder Woman wakes up in an unrecognizable world that was decimated and deformed long ago by a world war between mankind and the Amazons. Working alongside the dwindling survivors, Diana helped them fight the monstrous Haedra while learning about what happened and the role she played influencing such events. In its grand finale, we learn that it was a dying Batman who ensured that an injured Diana would survive long enough to earn a second chance at redemption and fixing the world she helped break.

In the Black Label series by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Russ Wooton, Diana woke up from a cryogenic slumber in the middle of a battle occurring in the remains of the Batcave. She would learn about the horrors of this post-apocalyptic world and how long she had been asleep when she uncovered the skeleton of her former Justice League member Batman sitting on his couch in the remains of Wayne Manor. Taking his famous utility belt, Diana journeyed into the world where she learned about the war between humanity and the Amazons and how Diana’s failure to broker peace ensured both civilization’s destruction. Not only learning the Haedra are mutated versions of the Amazons which include her mother Hippolyta, but Diana also discovered that she killed Superman in a fit of rage after witnessing the nuclear bombing of Themyscira. Understanding her failure and responsibility to make things right, Diana rushed into battle against her monstrous mother and her forces to prevent them from killing the remaining survivors of humanity that were, and are under the former Wonder Woman’s protection.

In Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #4, the issue begins with a flashback to the Fortress of Solitude where a dying Batman consults with a now-robotic Superman robot about Diana’s fate. Realizing his death from radiation poisoning is unavoidable, Bruce prepares contingency plans that he entrusts to be enacted in the future and takes an injured Diana some place where she can heal.

Underneath the ruins of his childhood home, Bruce ignores his desire to let Diana die due to her role in the fate of the world and seals her in a cryogenic healing chamber stating ” You may have broken the world…. but I know you’re the only one who can fix it.” Having done everything within his remaining power, Bruce shuffles back upstairs where the dying man pours himself a final drink. Sitting on his couch among the ruins, the former playboy and teetotaler drinks and manages to break his usual grim demeanor for a small smile and chuckle as he awaits the end.

Nobody lasts forever but Batman’s death has always been imagined in the field as the result of some grand apocalyptic attack or at the hands of one of his many iconic enemies. With his death being unavoidable due to current events in this timeline, Bruce Wayne accepts his impending demise with a somber and quiet nobility that feels just as in character as dying in battle. Warren Johnson wrote it that Batman is to thank for Diana’s second chance for if not for his intervention and technology, she would have never survived long enough to save the Earth again. As Diana strives to be worthy of both her powers and title as Earth’s protector, Wonder Woman and all of humanity’s survivors should do as Diana did earlier in the series and thank Batman for his preparation and in some ways, his faith in redemption and humanity.
