Two Thor and Loki Variants Will Never Appear in the MCU

Thanks to recent MCU projects, variants of iconic characters have been explored and proven very popular. However, one pair of variants of Thor and Loki won’t ever make it to a big screen – or even Disney Plus. Not Brand Echh #3 introduced Sore and Hokey – the worst versions of the characters the company made – on purpose.

Thor and Loki have become a fan-favorite sibling pair within the MCU. Loki especially has a tendency to demand attention and his variants in his self-titled show have been no exception. Alligator Loki, Sylvie, and even Throg have all had some popularity with fans. However, despite their success, not every variant is a good idea – and sometimes terrible ideas are exactly what creators have in mind.

Not Brand Echh is a spoof series of comics published by Marvel in 1967. Issues contained humorous iterations of the company’s iconic characters, as well as those of other companies like DC. The third issue – created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Frank Giacoia, and Artie Simek – introduces Sore and Hokey, knock-off versions of Thor and Loki. These two are so absurd they have zero chance of making it into the MCU. They’re not only off-brand rejects, these two characters are largely unknown, having only a single appearance.

Sore is the son of Shmodin, the leader of Jazzgard. In this universe, Loki’s variant – Hokey – is not a sibling to Sore. They are second-cousins twice removed. Nonetheless, Hokey still manages to be this hero’s number one enemy. Instead of being the god of mischief, Hokey is the god of all things rotten. He and Sore are continuously at odds, but the schemes of this god are far from Loki’s devious plots. For example, in one instance the two are at odds because Loki’s counterpart, Hokey, wants to borrow hairspray. Sore is so concerned about his hair, he doesn’t cave into his distant cousin’s requests. After all, it’s his turn to win in this issue – claiming Hokey won in the last one (which doesn’t actually exist since this is the first appearance of both characters).

Although siblings can fight over ridiculous things, a battle for hairspray is far from what fans have come to expect from Thor and Loki. This is especially true when Sore mentions attending a birthday party for his cousin where he will exact his revenge – being late. The god of mischief’s aspirations surpasses Hokey’s by far. Loki already has a reputation and this variant is a far cry from it. Hokey has none of the charm of Loki or his other variants and far less intrigue than his counterpart. If that weren’t enough, Sore is also a bumbling hero. Instead of Mjolnir, Sore wields a standard-looking hammer whose powers can be altered by Hokey’s spells. Since this pair of Marvel characters is incredibly humorous, they could belong in a project containing an Abbott and Costello or Three Stooges style of comedy, which isn’t currently at the height of popularity and likely wouldn’t fit into the MCU’s current vision. They could exist as a brief multiverse gag, expanding Marvel’s onscreen variants, but with there being numerous, better variants in comics, Thor and Loki’s worst iterations aren’t likely to make the cut.
