Batmans Sidekicks Question if Being Robin Was a Good Thing

Batman’s sidekicks question if being Robin was a good thing in a new teaser page from DC Comics. The third round of DC’s comic competition has begun. The fans have eliminated all but four titles. Sneak peeks of each remaining title have now been made available.

DC’s Round Robin competition has opened up round three of voting. One of the most popular books in the tournament has been Robins, which kicked Justice League Queer out of the contest in the first round before eliminating Lobo/Animal Man: Scorched Earth in the second. Now it is matched up against Green Lanterns: Underworlds on Fire starring Kilowog and Kyle Rayner.

Robins is being pitched by the creative team of writer Tim Seeley, artist Baldemar Rivas, colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr., and letterer Steve Wands. The Bat Family has become one of the most popular groups in DC Comics. Team-ups between the former Robins have continuously drawn attention from fans, but this comic promises something a bit different. This isn’t an average team-up comic. This is a behind-the-scenes tell-all story about sidekicks who have all been in the same role with varying results. Check out the summary and teaser page here:

In the Blüdhaven apartment of Dick Grayson, a group of young people meets for coffee, doughnuts, and kvetching (between long, awkward silences.) The only thing they have in common? All were once Kid Wonders. Sidekicks to Batman. Robins.

The summary seems general, but the new Bat Family-centered teaser page adds dimension to it. In it, the five Robins have gathered in the same place after finally arranging a time that fits everyone’s super schedule. This isn’t a bonding exercise or a team-up. It also isn’t a few superheroes hanging out because they love each other’s company so much. This is impromptu group therapy and reflection on the impact that being a sidekick has had, and not just anyone’s sidekick: Batman’s specifically. Each of these sidekicks has taken up the mantle but has also remained a superhero in some way, even though they’ve taken different paths. Now, the Robins will actually talk about if this is actually something they all should have gone through, if it has any benefit to them – or if it should all just be a regret they never should’ve been tasked with.

The Robins consist of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damian Wayne. Though technically Tim is the official Robin in current DC continuity, he shares that mantle with Damian, whose solo series is titled Robin despite him abandoning that mantle. Dick Grayson became Nightwing, Jason Todd eventually became Red Hood after dying and being resurrected, and Stephanie Brown has become Spoiler. Despite wearing the Kid Wonder mantle and having some serious lows or scars, each former Robin has continued to live the lifestyle they fell into.

After arcs like Death in the Family and events like Barbara Gordon’s injuries that ended her time as Batgirl, it isn’t hard to imagine that being Robin is life-changing, difficult and even scarring. Adding Bruce’s reservations, hesitations, and closed nature to that mix certainly doesn’t help. What is more surprising is how long it has taken to potentially have a moment like this. Heroes often ask themselves if they’re making a difference or whether they can continue doing what they’re doing. Fans often ask what it would be like if Batman fought crime differently or if Jason Todd hadn’t initially died. Now, the Robins are all going to confront themselves – and each other – about what fighting next to Batman for years really did to them – for the better or the worse.
