Mortal Kombat Nitaras History As Outworlds First Vampire

Over the decades, the Mortal Kombat franchise has expanded its lore by creating characters that can be anything from a robot to a ghost brought back from the dead. However, the 3D era of the franchise saw some of the biggest additions to the canon that helped create unique interpretations of classic ideas. Nitara was a character that exemplified this strategy by becoming the franchise’s first vampire.

Nitara is from one of the many different realms. She was initially going to be introduced alongside a male vampire in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. The idea was ultimately scrapped due to time constraints, but many of the character’s aesthetics were repurposed for Rain in Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Nitara is often shown with two bat wings, and one eye covered by a red sash and was the franchise’s first fighter to utilize blood magic, predating Skarlet.

Mortal Kombat Nitaras History As Outworlds First Vampire

Like Reptile, Nitara isn’t considered a true villain as her allegiances lie with separating her own realm from Outworld. However, while she shares similar ideals to Reptile, she is far more intelligent., When she isn’t fighting, she has used her mind to outsmart her enemies and even used their skills to her advantage. But when she is forced to fight an enemy one-on-one, she isn’t afraid to make things bloody.

Similar to Skarlet, a majority of her moveset lies in creative applications for blood. This has included the ability to spit blood at an opponent. That being said, her vampiric nature also forces her to feast on the blood of others. Players could access this ability as a fatality where she would pounce on an enemy, draining their life force. Nitara had a fairly prominent role in the middle era of the franchise but following her death in Mortal Kombat: Armaggedon was not seen as a playable character again.

While her history has been largely left to speculation since her last appearance, Mortal Kombat 11 has offered some insight into what she was up to in this new timeline. During the pre-fight dialogue between Erron Black and Skarlet, it was revealed that the gunslinger once dated the vampire before he met Skarlet. The line was played for laughs, but more pieces to the puzzle have been presented through the game’s konsumables. Some of these items that aid a fighter in battle have been titled Nitara’s Clipped Wings, Gloves of the Dead and Ball of Coagulated Blood, to name a few. The items create blood-related offenses that, according to the description, are sent forth by Nitara. This implies that she is still present in the reset timeline while she isn’t a playable character.

Nitara is one of the least known and explored characters in the franchise, but her vampiric origins have helped introduce similar characters like Skarlet and expanded the lore into the universe it is today. Now, it’s only a matter of time before the vampiric and morally ambiguous femme fatale swoops into the franchise for another battle.
