Battlefield 2042 Adds 64-Player Conquest, But Only for a Limited Time

For a limited period of time, developer DICE has enabled 64-player Conquest and Breakthrough modes in Battlefield 2042 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S hardware. Battlefield 2042’s Conquest Mode previously supported 128 players exclusively across PC and new-gen consoles; though such a thought excited many a fan ahead of launch, the player count’s execution has left much to be desired. This especially holds true since users have reported encountering framerate hitches in matches with a high number of simultaneous participants.

Performance-related concerns aren’t all that plague the futuristic military shooter, however. Even prior to its release, Battlefield 2042 was beset by graphical hiccups, myriad gameplay errors, matchmaking issues, and more. DICE managed to tackle several of the most prevalent problems in a day one patch and subsequent updates, yet some players remain unhappy about the current state of things. Given that Battlefield 2042’s final update of 2021 went live last week on December 9, whatever troubles linger will have to wait until 2022. The team at DICE made room for one interesting change as everyone heads into the holidays, however.

Yesterday, December 14, DICE announced Battlefield 2042 players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms can access 64-player versions of Conquest and Breakthrough. However, the reduced player number for these modes will only remain in place for a limited period of time, according to posts on an official Battlefield Twitter account. The 64-player modes will presumably stay live through the holidays, considering the wording of a subsequent tweet from the account, which notes: “The featured Rush playlist will be staying with us in #BattlefieldPortal through the Holidays, too.” As of writing, though, it does not appear as though DICE has shared a specific cut-off date for any of these limited-time features.

Because Battlefield 2042’s sometimes struggles to maintain high performance due to the 128-player modes, many users have expressed disappointment that the 64-player option on higher-end hardware won’t stick around permanently. Whether or not DICE changes its mind on the matter at a later date remains to be seen, of course.

The newest Battlefield installment introduced a whole host of changes to the long-running franchise’s traditional formula. Notably, the lack of a Battlefield 2042 single-player campaign is still a point of contention. The switch from a Class system to unique Specialists won’t soon exit the topic of discussion, either. Thus, the next year or so should prove interesting for the much-maligned FPS title.
