During QuakeCon 2021, id Software’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin detailed DOOM Eternal 6.66, an update that will unleash improvements to Battlemode matchmaking and the previously promised Horde Mode. The development team originally planned to release an Invasion Mode, which would’ve seen players invading the single-player campaigns of others.

Id Software elected to shelve the mode, however, since “unforeseen consequences of the pandemic” so greatly affected Invasion Mode’s production cycle. Thus, a single-player Horde Mode took its stead, according to an announcement the studio made earlier this summer in July. Players were also promised that a future DOOM Eternal update would further improve upon the matchmaking process in Battlemode, though id wouldn’t offer specifics at the time. Fortunately, the advent of QuakeCon 2021 has brought with it much clarity about the the DOOM sequel’s next major content rollout.

According to the id Software developers, Update 6.66 drops on an unspecified date this fall and will unlock access to the all-new Horde Mode, a gauntlet that throws waves of demons at players. Fans will want to focus on getting as high of a score as possible; as such, when marked high-priority enemies enter the fray, users would do well to take them out quickly for a bonus.

Stronghold, another Battlemode arena, sits on the docket for 6.66 as well, complete with two Master Levels – Mars Core and World Spear.

Id Software’s support for DOOM Eternal has been nothing short of admirable.
