However, we’d wager that a majority of those eagerly anticipating the game weren’t even aware that it’s based on a tabletop RPG.

10 When Was The Cyberpunk Tabletop Released?

The Cyberpunk table-top role-playing game, which is what the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 is based upon, was first created and released back in 1988 by Mike Pondsmith. It was published by R. Talsorian Games and is commonly referred to by its second and fourth edition names, namely Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk Red.

The original Cyberpunk game components of the box set include a 44-page handbook, a 38-page sourcebook, a 20-page Combat Book, as well as two ten-sided dice and four additional pages of game aids. In addition to the recently-released Cyberpunk 2077, Pondsmith, along with his team of scribes at R.Talsorian, developed a prequel tabletop game, dubbed Cyberpunk Red, which takes thirty-two years earlier.

Roleplaying fanatics were treated to a substantial teaser of the prequel just last year when the Cyberpunk Red: Jumpstart Kit dropped at a tabletop convention. The boxed starter set is currently available for sale and features a slim rulebook and a brief set of adventures.

5 How Does The System Work?

The rules of the Cyberpunk tabletop game are based upon R. Talsorian’s Interlock system. Stats and skills are rated on a scale of 0 – 10.

There are nine attributes in the role-playing board game; Intelligence (INT), Reflexes (REF), Cool (COOL), Technical Ability (TECH), Luck (LUCK), Attractiveness (ATT), Movement (MOVE), Empathy (EMP), and Body (BOD). All characters have to have a starting attribute stat minimum of 2, with the maximum being 10.

4 Character Creation

Much like video game RPGs, table-top games also allow for endless character creation options. As Cyberpunks, players embrace the world of body modification, cybertech, and bioengineering. In the Cyberpunk tabletop game, characters live by three core principal beliefs: “Style over substance, attitude is everything, always take it to the edge, and break the rules.” The board game features ten classes, with each one boasting its own special abilities. These classes include assassins, bodyguards, netrunners (hackers), nomads, fixers, and more.

When players start a game, they’re provided with a set of rules; players can either assign points to purchase skills or by rolling ten-sided dice for random outcomes. The game includes a system called “Lifepath,” which further develops each character.

3 The Story

The story of the original table-top game sees the collapse of all global superpowers and the rise of Megacorporations, who constantly battle it out for dominance. The world of Cyberpunk 2020 has seen food shortages, famine, and the Middle East has become a radioactive desert.

In a dystopian world wrought with warfare, the advent of bioengineering has led to the rapid development of advanced cybernetic enhancements and the age of human-machine interfaces.

2 Combat

The combat system featured in the Cyberpunk tabletop game is known as Friday Night Firefight (FNFF), which has a core emphasis on lethality. As opposed to other role-playing game systems, which sees characters building more hit points (HP) as they progress, the amount of damage a character can take does not increase in Cyberpunk as the character progresses and levels up.

At this stage, despite the game only having launched on December 10th, it’s obvious that, despite mixed reviews, Cyberpunk 2077 is set to be a huge hit.
