Players in Battlefield 2042 have noticed that some of the weapon scopes feature connections to wifi and cellular data. Electronic Arts and developer DICE launched the newest Battlefield entry late last week on consoles and PC to lukewarm reception. It’s especially taken a hit with user reviews on the most popular PC storefront, given that Battlefield 2042 counts among Steam’s worst-reviewed games of all time. At the time of writing, only 25 percent of the user scores bear a positive rating, placing DICE’s latest in a league alongside the likes of RollerCoaster Tycoon World and Godus.

This marks quite the departure for the long-running series in several ways. For one, Battlefield 2042 is an online-only title that does not boast a single-player story campaign, something that remains a point of contention amongst the community. To the chagrin of many, DICE also did away with the traditional Class system in favor of introducing Specialist characters that each come with unique gadgets and abilities. But EA’s futuristic military shooter packs in a fair few surprises, too.

While peering through a weapon scope in Battlefield 2042, Reddit user hara0329g noticed intersting etchings on the scope’s glass. The markings in question include displays for a wifi signal, cellular bars, and battery. Since the new Battlefield installment takes place roughly 20 years in the future, these seemingly strange details shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Interestingly, though, those in the know, as relayed by Redditor Spartan1836, previously divulged that some scopes utilized by the military do indeed feature wifi and battery displays. It would seem the future is now.

It’s not clear how exactly wifi and cellular data-related additions to the scope work in-game, yet, in practicality, they could prove a boon in terms of accurately measuring distance, locating targets, and so on. Given the sophistication of modern weaponry, it’s no surprise that such technology already has useful applications.

Players continue to question Battlefield 2042’s quality following its incredibly buggy beta phase, glitch-filled early access period, and messy launch. DICE deployed a day one patch to address several known issues, notably tackling everything from lag to display name errors. And two additional updates should go live in the coming weeks, the first of which will solve problems related to vehicle balancing, missing loadouts, soldier revives, and UAV-1 interaction. A set release date for the new patch has yet to surface.
