Channing Tatum has unveiled the trailer for his upcoming buddy comedy Dog. The film marks Tatum’s first prominent live-action role since 2017, when he starred in Logan Lucky and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Tatum is also known for his roles in Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street, Hail, Caesar!, and The Hateful Eight. Tatum was famously set to star as the X-Men character Gambit in a solo film, but the project languished in development. Still, Tatum hasn’t let the disappointment slow him down; he’s set to star in the upcoming rom-com adventure The Lost City with Sandra Bullock and now Dog, the actor’s directorial debut.

Tatum released the trailer on his Instagram account, where he included some captioned commentary: “This process of making @dogthefilm has been one of the craziest journeys of my life!” The trailer sees two former Army rangers—one human and one canine—embarking on a road trip to a fellow soldier’s funeral. Tatum tries to tame the unruly dog as she lays waste to his car seats, eventually bonding with her over thunderstorms and in the tub. “If you would enjoy watching me get bit by a dog,” adds Tatum, “this will be a very fulfilling and funny movie for you.” Dog is set for a February 2022 release. Dog reunites Tatum with co-director Reid Carolin, who wrote and produced Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL. Carolin also served as an executive producer on the Tatum-starring films 22 Jump Street and White House Down and he will produce an upcoming war drama film starring Tatum and Tom Hardy. The filmmaking partners will retread familiar ground on Dog, having met while working on Kimberly Peirce’s 2008 Iraq war drama Stop-Loss and later co-producing Deborah Scranton’s 2017 HBO documentary War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend.

The official synopsis for Dog reads: “[The film] is a buddy comedy that follows the misadventures of two former Army Rangers paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Army Ranger Briggs (Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) buckle into a 1984 Ford Bronco and race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, break a small handful of laws, narrowly evade death, and learn to let down their guards in order to have a fighting chance of finding happiness.” MGM’s description accompanying the Dog trailer succinctly captures the film’s interspecies buddy comedy ethos: “A filthy animal unfit for human company… and a dog.”
