Many Battlefield 2042 players have taken umbrage with some of the snarky catchphrases voiced by the Specialist characters. Battlefield faithful were wary of Battlefield 2042’s introduction of Specialists when developer DICE announced its decision to forgo the return of the traditional Class system.

In past Battlefield titles, Classes invited the use of soldier types such as Assault or Engineer. Battlefield 2042’s Specialists, on the other hand, bear unique gadgets and abilities that range from scanners and drones to grappling hooks and sentry guns. One key concern is that some players may exploit the new system by constantly relying on the more overpowered Specialists, effectively disrupting any semblance of balance. These valid concerns will no doubt be put to the test once the full game launches later this week. But now another concern has bubbled to the surface, one centered around the shooter’s tone as it relates to the quippy lines of dialogue often delivered by Specialists in Battlefield 2042 matches.

Players exploring Battlefield 2042 in its current early release phase are not happy with the catchphrases voiced by Specialist characters. An “Expectation vs. Reality” meme from Reddit user oakley_ exemplifies the issue, highlighting the game’s premise about the “greatest crisis in human history” and juxtaposing it against dialogue lines that include “I’ve had five coffees already” and “That’s it? I’m ready for round two.” Redditor nemesis_464 examined the tone switch further, likening the Specialist dialogue to “cheerful or snarky TikTok catchphrases.” It’s especially jarring when considering the gut-wrenching voice lines from Battlefield 1, wherein soldiers desperately call out to their fellow fighters or lament an incoming loss.

The new lines of dialogue sound more appropriate for the tone of Fortnite or Apex Legends than Battlefield, futuristic setting or not. Once the rest of the community gets its hands on the shooter, the catchphrase discussion is bound to pick up steam. Should that occur, it’ll be interesting to see if and how the development crew at DICE responds to such criticism.

Electronic Arts and DICE unveiled the new shooter earlier this summer, promising to deliver the most ambitious Battlefield title to date. That certainly seems the case in terms of scope, particularly given the online support of up to 128 players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S hardware. As things currently stand, though, early impressions of the final product itself seem mixed at best.
